Lab studies (it's the only thing I know, sorry for using them all the time) in people show that 40mg injected feels great, but that 80mg you feel very very bad! So the dosage is really important.
Also, since it's a mixed agonist/antagonist, you can't take it with other opioids, or anytime near the same time (24-48 hours) as them. But if it's the only thing you take, and take less than 50 or so mg of it, you should be okay. Moms who have cesarean sections average 53mg of Talwin to block their pain.
But you know the bit about the history of Talwin, right? Usually it's only offered in a pill that has naloxone in it, too. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids but is made inactive by the digestive system when you eat it. But if you were to cook up the pill and inject it, the naloxone skips the digestive system, stays active, and counters the effects of the Talwin. The reason for this measure, specifically with Talwin, is that it is not like most opioids, and can give you seizures. There was a rash of deadly seizures from IV Talwin users in the '70s, and ever since, drug makers have added naloxone to their pills to prevent this from happening.
But now ourrx4less is offering 40mg Talwin in ampules, ready to inject! I'm not complaining, it's darn cool and something I've never seen before, but you have to be super careful with these.
In sum, they can cause seizures; don't take more than 50mgs, and don't take it if you've taken an opiate/opioid like hydro in the last day. Otherwise, it's cool and it's still marketed (with naloxone) because even by pill it works for pain. Kudos to Ourrx4less - I wish they'd add a warning or something to the listing, though...
