you may not be able to avoid a MRI especially that you reinjured it. on the net there are very few places to get C2 most are illegal. a local MD is probly the only wayto get a C2.

Deitrus,
I have disc herniations in my lower back & degenerative disc disease from a car accident that I was in about 6 years ago. I was fortunate for a while to where my condition only acted up every so often, but after aggravating my old injury in work 8 months ago, it seems like I've been in pain more often than not, especially in damp weather, so I can kind of relate to your situation.
Right now, I take 7.5 mg hydrocodone/325 mg APAP for pain when needed, and it seems to be working out fine for my pain. You might want to do some research on it before you go that route, but IMO, anything that can completely take the pain away and helping me get through my every day activities is like a miracle to me. There's a high chance of dependency with hydro, so that's why I try to limit myself on how much I take, and there's also the side effect that some people experience where you have a heightened sense of euphoria, which is probably what ties it into being a potentially addictive painkiller.
You might want to give it a try, since it's in the opiate family like Oxycodone, just not as strong. If you're used to taking Oxycodone, you might want to try the 10 mg hydro/325 APAP combo, since the extra hydro might work more effectively for your pain threshold. I tried them before, and they were too strong for me, but then again, I'm only 5'2 and weigh about 125 lbs. Somebody suggested that I try a lower dose and so far, so good!!
For the days that aren't so bad, I just take OTC Ibuprofen. I asked my last doctor if he would prescribe me the prescription strength, but he told me that if I took 3 OTC 200 mg Motrin, Advil or even the store brand, that it will give me the same amount of relief as a 600 mg prescription strength and it's safe to do this. I've only gone as far as taking 2 at a time, but that might also be something that could help you out with pain, since it contains an anti-inflammatory agent and while it doesn't completely take the pain away (at least for me), it dulls it to the point to where I can at least function.
I hope this helped to answer some of your questions, and good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon!!

If the methadone is making you tired all the time, you should probably bring that up with your doc. When properly dosed you might go through a 'slow' period when first starting but that should fade (IME anyway) after several days or a week, maybe a little longer. I know when I was on it my initial dose was too high and I was always groggy, but after having the dose lowered a bit everything was great. All the benefits of methadone (only dosing once a day, not very expensive) with few side-effects unless the dosage was toyed with. Which I don't recommend doing! Anyway, good luck!

I also have been scripted 5/325 roxicet (generic percocet) for post epidural back injections. Very effective, only problem is that this medication is very habit forming. More so than hydro. Be very careful with any form of oxycodone. Serious medicine. No Kept off the board.

melody,
There are 15 and 30 mg pills that are used for breakthrough pain. They have the same medicine in them as Oxycontin (medicine is called oxycodone), and the only difference is that they are not time-released. I think they are called oxy IR (IR = instant release) or sometimes I've heard them called roxycodone, which I believe is the generic name for them. Hope this helps u out.

I'm reposting this from another place on the forum as I may have put it there instead of here by mistake.
I'm confused by this thread. Oxycodone & Oxycontin are discussed as if they are the same thing. Are they?
I was prescribed 5mg. oxycodone for shingles pain, didn't work that well, but thank God, shingles went away. I'm allergic to tylenol, therefore I was given oxycodone instead of vicodin. Is this the same drug as the notorious Oxycontin? And why is oxycontin so notorious? I'm kind of shocked that I have a script (no refills) for such a famous drug & my MD said nothing to me about it, but then again it's only for 5 mg, 30 tablets.
Obviously I'm not a chronic pain sufferer, my issues are with anxiety & depression. I'm just curious. Of course I'm saving this med in case of any pain emergency.

Oxycodone is usually combined with tylenol (or APAP) and called "percocet." Oxycontin has the same drug in it, but it's just time-released. They're both schedule II drugs and hard to get from doctors, nearly impossible online.
Oxycontin is just the scape-goat of narcotics, thanks to the media. I've heard of a lot of people even being disappointed with it after they've tried it.

I suffer from severe/chronic pain following a bad accident. I currently take MS Contin 30mg. I was wondering if any of you know how that compares to oxycontin? Is one of them better for chronic pain?

Morphine is 75% cleared by the liver before it egts to the bloodstream; 30mg MSCONTIN is equivilant to 7.5mg morphine IV OVER 6 hours. Oxycodone is NOT CLEARDEd by the liver before blood. So in general a 40mg oxycontin tabled would be more effective than taking 30mg morphine orally over 6 hours.
But everyone is different - your mileage may vary. I have found that 20mg morphine IV (or 80mg orally) is way too sedating for me to function. The oxy (or even hydro) is not as sedating.
If the 30mg MSCONTIN works for pain - ask for 15mg OXYIR or 40mg oxycontin to replace it.
And the people who abouse Oxy to emulate hgerion also usually take clonipin (or another sedating benzo) to emulate the morphine/herion effects.
I wouldn't know - I have a sleep disorder and 1mg of clonipin makes me pass out

Do Dr's see one as being more or less addictive(MS Contin vs. Oxycontin). I don't want to appear "drug seeking" to my doctor but my father is a pharmacist and he had also suggested that the oxycontin may be less sedating. I'm also taking amitiptylin so between the two I sleep at least 12 hours per day. My husband gets very annoyed. I'm continuing to improve but my pain remains quite consistant. I want to approach this appropriately since I have a Doctor who is working hard to rehabilitate me. Besides the MS Contin 3 times a day I also take 10mg IR sublingual morphine for breakthrough pain (2 to 3 times per day). My last Doctor suggested I go on the fentanyl patch.
I'm really looking for some advice here. I don't plan to be on these medications forever. Is oxy more or less addictive? What about the patch? I'm sick of being so tired all the time.
Help

Still waiting for some helpful information. I'm new to all of this (in fact I'm replying to my own question - Thank you Rockystuart for your information though). I will try to be patient but I'm hoping to go into my next Dr. appt knowing what to discuss with him. I'm really looking for someone with experience with these medications or a Doctor online to provide me with information in regards to my last e-mail. I'm trying to figure out what my best options may be.

i've been on avinza the patch and oxycontin and i got to say the oxy wins for pain relief the patch sucks was on the 50 and i was in pain all the time avinza the morphine capsule same thing didn't help pain oxy is good and i would go for that before the patch cause its hard to keep on and keep it from buckleing up and not working properly even with the bioclusive covers from the company. you'll probably get 20mg twice a day. and i bet it works better than 30 mg morphine.

Its not as easy as it seems to answer your question, because every single person in this entire world reacts differently to different chemicals. It all depends upon your own personal body chemistry, size, tolerance and just general body make-up. There is no clear-cut, one size fits all answer. Its just plain & simple that some things work better for differnt peeps, than for others. Some people break their leg and claim aspirin is great for pain. Other people Love hydro for a headache, but not for anything else. Its just that everyone is different, and reacts differently to differnt medications. As you see above some people think the duragesic patch sucks, and others will claim it saved their life!! So the only thing you can do is try a few different things and see which work best for you and your situation. All the meds mentioned above (oxycodone, oxycontin, fentanyl, hydrocodone, methadone, morphine sulfate, and even codiene) are all narcotic in nature and controlled substances with the potential for abuse. Also with the potential to help enormously with pain. I wish you the best in your endeavor to determine which works best for you, and not be so tired all the time. You may need a lower dose if you are VERY very tired all the time.. I find narcotics don't make me sleepy at all; just the opposite (there is just one example of a difference right there)
Your mileage will definitely vary
Hope this clears things up just a little,

Leap,
I'm glad you asked this question. I'm amazed at posts on all these forums which contain wholly inaccurate information --not this thread in particular, but these Boards in general.
I take both Oxycodone & Oxycontin. Both of them contain the same medication; which is Oxycodone. I'm confused because you mentioned you are allergic to Tylenol; however, Oxycodone is typically Rx'd as 5/325, which of course, is 5 mg. of Oxycodone and also contains 325 mg. of Tylenol.
Oxycontin is Oxycodone, but contains no Tylenol and is an extended release form of the drug and lasts anywhere from 8 - 12 hours. (Usually more like 6-8 in my case).
Oxycontin is notorious because it's the "street drug of choice" and has high street value (usually a per mg. charge), and people also abuse it by crushing the medication which could also cause an overdose, so if you ever have Oxycontin, do NOT crush or break the tablet for safety sake. For example, a 40 mg. Oxycontin is equivalent to eight 5 mg. Oxycodone pills. So if a person were to crush or break an Oxycontin tablet, it would be equal to taking eight Oxycodone pills at the same time!!??
What specifically does your Oxycodone label read, because maybe you were Rx'd what's called IR which is immediate release and no Tylenol. Hope this helps?

Just from experience and being around 'the scene' for a decade or more, one thing to consider is the tolerance issue with oxycodone, especially oxycontin users. I've known many folks who could maintain a reasonably stable level of med intake to control the pain with most pain meds, with the occasional increase in dosage needed of course, but i've seen far too many people get onto the OC train and go from 40 mg a day to 160mg a day in just a couple months or less. I have no statistics to prove it but knowing a lot of pain patients who have been on the gamut of drugs, all seem to agree that oxycontin was the one that seemed like the tolerance would never stop going up. YMMV of course, but out of dozens of people I talk with, I can't think of any that would disagree with what I said.
Personally I think methadone is a great long-term pain reliever because you only have to dose once a day for the most part, and your tolerance doesn't seem to climb very fast at all unless you're abusing it or doing something else wrong...
Just my 2¢ of course.....

LISTOVER,
Did you read my questions? So do you think I would be making the situation worse if I switched medications? I am really looking for geed feedback here. I need to be awake, I'm in a lot of pain and I don't want to be addicted to drugs forever. My Doctor will help me when the time comes to go off the medication, if I ever get better but I don't want to make this worse on myself. If every person who read this sight that had taken oxy vs. MScontin would let me know what they thought I might shut up.
No - I'm just kidding. I'm no andynewbie I'll shut up now.

Hi Jenerator,
I'll help you, but can only speak for myself and your mileage may vary. I've been prescribed almost every Schedule II medication out there over the last 5 years, including both MS Contin and Oxycontin. (At separate times, of course).
Put it this way. The doc I had two years ago was more than willing to write for MS Contin, but he would NOT write for Oxycontin for ANYONE. So I guess there's you answer via a medical doctor. You see, although all narcotics are addictive, we never hear about MS Contin and the abuse levels. Rather, we hear about Oxycontin and it's abuse out there.
I must say that Oxycontin is far more addicting than MS Contin. Put it this way. If you lined up 100 docs and asked them if they'd rather rx MS Contin or Oxycontin to a patient who needs one or the other, 99 of them would write for the MS Contin.
So before you consider switching, do consider this, and also do a lot of googling for yourself and read Medical forums, such as the Harvard forums and those. You might gain more knowledge from the Medical side than from the patient side?
Hope this helps you.

Chimingin,
Thanks for your message. You gave me the answer I was looking for. I will continue to research the subject online. I have a good Doctor patient relationship and I'm concerned about tarnishing it. I know I can talk to him about most things but I don't want to alienate him by requesting a drug he may have issues with. We recently moved and the previous Doctor I had was the one treating since the day my leg was crushed. It was scary to have to find a new Doctor at all. It's interesting because if it wasn't a narcotic (say like a cox2) I wouldn't be concerned to ask. As I said before I don't want to be on medication forever, I'm too young yet.
Thanks again for your response I really appreciate it.

Hey Jenerator,
I've been there, and know *exactly* how you feel. It seems Oxycontin is the last drug most docs will write for. I had a doc put me on every Schedule II drug known to man between Percocets, Duragesic Patches, MS Contin, Methadone, etc. etc., and one day when I brought up Oxycontin, he stopped me in my tracks and sent me onto the Pain Clinic. It was a nightmare. I went to the Pain Clinic for a year and then determined that place was about "rules" vs. "individual patient care." I know they need rules at a PM Clinic, but I wasn't doing anything wrong and felt like a prisoner (of course, I put that feeling on myself). So when I called and told them I was having bigtime problems with a certain Schedule II, I was simply told, "Keep taking it." That was the last straw.
I then said that I was going to start fresh and go back to the drawing Board with PCP docs. I remembered a doc I had seen for a torn ligament in my ankle a few years before and remembered how caring, compassionate, etc. he was over an ankle?!?! I poured out my history (he spent over an hour with me that day), poured out my tears of pain, told him the 100% truth about my experiences, and have seen him ever since...I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my relationship with him--not ever.
I would however caution you on this. Don't start Oxycontin, unless you absolutely 100% need it.
