TO Drugbuyers.com
If you ARE using the Alexia or other spyware program, please stop. All it does it stop the sharing of information. If I want an op, I will surf the net. And again, the only time I get this junk e mail is when I post or even LOOK at this board.
I have nothing to hide, but I beleive in privacy.
And since we live in paranoid times, do we REALLY know who OWNS this site?

There are freeware programs that remove these types of spyware on your system. spybot, adaware, & popup blockers that clean out the tracking cookies every time you log off the internet. "Spybot" seems to work the best as well as "SmartPopupBlocker101" you should also have a firewall as well. You can try "zonealarm" from zone labs. All of these products are free or either offer free versions of their products. They seem to work pretty well. I realize that doesn't stop people from putting this spyware on their web pages, but it will protect you from them when they do.

I use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware software to detect and remove Spyware. It's free and they constantly provide updates (just like the anti-virus signature updates). I run it every time I get off the Internet in order to clean all the Spyware off. I also have my browser (IE 6) set to delete all Temporary Internet Files whenever I close the browser.
I still get all that crappin' spam addressed to my email address but fortunately I have Earthlink SPAMBLOCKER which ROCKS!

I belong to another message board (a parenting board)and spend a ton of time there (5000+ posts in the last two years) and it seems that I pick up a ton of spyware. I'm wondering if you can get spyware installed on your computer just from visiting a webpage? When I email the spyware websites to ask how their program was installed on my computer, they tell me that there is no way that it automatically downloads. They said that I would have to download a program that their program is bundled with, but I haven't downloaded anything in months and months, so I think they are lying. Does anyone know for sure if you can get spyware just by visiting a message board?

What you are probably getting are tracking cookies from web pages, I believe one was mentioned on the original thread, and yes some freeware has spyware bundled in it. Adaware or spybot will remove it. I use both but find that spybot will find things that adaware will not. Also spybot will allow you to immunize your computer to some 500 known threats. All updates for these products are continious & free.

Don't blame DB. Maybe it was a site you visited after seeing it mentioned here. I don't think DB uses any kind of spyware. Alexa is built in to Internet Exploder so blame M$FT for that one. There are some easy ways around Alexa. Do a Google and learn how to control the related.htm file that Alexa uses. I don't mind Google offering me their "Suggested Links" when i do a search but i don't trust M$FT ... but that's just me. Sometimes the Suggested Links box has interesting sites. If you use the internet from home, you probably don't have much privacy no matter how many doodads you have running unless you get into encryption and chained proxy servers. Your best bet is to use a hardened install of unix and just forget about using Windoze for the internet.
The simplest way to have privacy on web browsing is to use public computers and use a different username and password for every single account you have ... and change them regularly. Many people use the same username and password for many different accounts. Well, if you sign up on a message board and use the same login to check your e-mail and also at your bank or credit card, well, you can imagine the possible damage.
Zonealarm has a spyware tool they try to sell me but i gave it their free trial and it gave me false alarms telling me i had spyware running that just wasn't there. Their free firewall works fine but i don't trust them for their paid software. Most people would be fooled into believing it. It's bordering on fraud to falsely tell people that they have spyware just to sell them their anti-spyware software.

I've gotten advertisements from sources I know, but never anything I could call spam.
AOL is great for sending spam and I know lots of people who use it. Couldn't pay me to use that J~

I just wanted to say that I don't get spam either. I may have got 2 advertisings since being a member here and those really don't bother me. I use a free email address (yahoo, hotmail, etc) for all my memberships to anything on the internet. That way spam doesn't clog up my home email address.

I use Ad-Aware. I think that's considered spyware.
Its an excellent free spyware detector - an anti-spyware program. I run a spyware scan prior to shutting down my laptop each night...just remember to check for updates each time you run it as new spyware is developed constantly and Adaware updates the detectors daily.

Trampy is right.
I do use Zone Alarm firewall ( paid version) but not it's spyware program !
Don't blame DB for the emails u receive.
I have been on this board and the VIP side for over a year now, and have never received spam email or snail mail.
Lavasoft is a good program for spyware removal.
I prefer Spybot, simply because I used Lavasoft AdAware for awhile, then tried Spybot, which found things Lavasoft never did.
( both are free )

Can someone recommend a spyware removal/detector program for MAC? Everything I've seen is for a PC.

MACS are not as easy as a target as Windows for spyware.
I don't know of any spyware programs for MACS.
U can try a search for spyware scan, but most of the programs will scan your machine, then ask you for money to download their program to remove anything.
Maybe someone on here with more experience with MACS can offer u advice on a spyware program for them.
Sorry, I don't know of any.
( watch your media player, though, if u have Real One installed, that's a good one for putting spyware on. )
Also, if u have Kazaa, u have Spyware.
I had Kazaa for awhile, but had a program installed , which was made by some people in the U.K.,( which blocked ALL spyware, --toolbar and everything )
It was great.
Then I bought a new computer, and could not transfer the data over to it. That program is no where to be found now.
So........no Kazzaa...........
I miss that program.
But with the spyware/adware that comes with it, it's not worth it, even if it's free.

Check out this site & do a search: www.komando.com
It is the site of the weekend computer radio talk show host Kim Komando. There are several freeware options & she seems to have both choices of everything. Thats where I got my spybot, adaware, & zonealarm. They also have a freeware antivirus called AVG made from lavasoft. All work very good for me. AVG just caught a trojan horse comming thru last nite & removed it. Everything I use is free!
Good luck!

I know, just a few people don't understand how cookies work.
Nevertheless, the advice people received from this thread was some of the best advice around. And its all freeware too!
Always protect your machine & keep it updated. So this thread was very helpful to a lot of people.
Thank you DB!

Moonshade,
I listen to Kim Komando's show too. It's usually pretty interesting, and she does provide some good links for free software.

We do not know for sure how spammers get their email addresses but if you are with AOL this may be one reason
Quote:
New York Times - 15 minutes ago
An engineer working for America Online was arrested yesterday and charged with stealing 92 million e-mail addresses of AOL customers and selling them to spammers that were peddling penis enlargement pills and online gambling sites.
