I was prescribed 5mg. oxycodone for shingles pain, didn't work that well, but thank God, shingles went away. I'm allergic to tylenol, therefore I was given oxycodone instead of vicodin. Is this the same drug as the notorious Oxycontin? And why is oxycontin so notorious? I'm kind of shocked that I have a script (no refills) for such a famous drug & my MD said nothing to me about it, but then again it's only for 5 mg, 30 tablets.
Obviously I'm not a chronic pain sufferer, my issues are with anxiety & depression. I'm just curious. Of course I'm saving this med in case of any pain emergency.

I'm glad you asked this question. I'm amazed at posts on all these forums which contain wholly inaccurate information --not this thread in particular, but these Boards in general.
I take both Oxycodone & Oxycontin. Both of them contain the same medication; which is Oxycodone. I'm confused because you mentioned you are allergic to Tylenol; however, Oxycodone is typically Rx'd as 5/325, which of course, is 5 mg. of Oxycodone and also contains 325 mg. of Tylenol.
Oxycontin is Oxycodone, but contains no Tylenol and is an extended release form of the drug and lasts anywhere from 8 - 12 hours. (Usually more like 6-8 in my case).
Oxycontin is notorious because it's the "street drug of choice" and has high street value (usually a per mg. charge), and people also abuse it by crushing the medication which could also cause an overdose, so if you ever have Oxycontin, do NOT crush or break the tablet for safety sake. For example, a 40 mg. Oxycontin is equivalent to eight 5 mg. Oxycodone pills. So if a person were to crush or break an Oxycontin tablet, it would be equal to taking eight Oxycodone pills at the same time!!??
What specifically does your Oxycodone label read, because maybe you were Rx'd what's called IR which is immediate release and no Tylenol. Hope this helps?
