oxycontin comes in 10 20 40 60 80 mg doses. when taken CORRECTLY the outer coating lets it be relesed slowly over 10-12 hrs. in that way you receive a steady dose. ie if you took a 10mg oc it would be equal to almost .80 mg per hour. so that you would have a steady amount. when you take a regular oxycone pill ie 5/325 you body has a peak within 30-60 mins. then it rapidly drops as your liver matabolizes it. so you need to take another every 4 hours so that the amount of oxy in your blood does not drop below theraputic levels. that is why people try to overcome the time relese coating so they get a sudden rush of the oxy. when you have a steady level you are less prone to euphoria of IR meds. thus addiction is not as rapid. BUT physical depandance can come just as quick with time relese. your body gets use to the stady state. let me tell you the worst W/D i ever had was from OC i was on it for three months and quit cold turkey. I will never do that again.
