Drug Enforcement dogs
      #95274 - 08/23/03 10:15 AM

I've always been curious about this and haven't been able to locate an answer. If any dog experts or trainers know, please jump in. My question is this.
I realize that the DEA and Customs 'drug-sniffing' dogs can route through packages, cars, mail, etc.. and locate street drugs like marijuana/cocaine. Are these same trained dogs able to sniff-out pills? Sounds like a dumb question but everyone I've talked to doesn't have a clue.

I don't believe they can smell pills. I walked by a dog in mexico about 5 years ago when it was legal to walk 3 scripts across the border.
I think they are trained to get cocaine and marijauna but i am not an expert on this.

From October 1996 through September 1997, U.S. Customs Canine Enforcement Teams were involved in over 9,200 narcotic or currency related seizures. The street value of the narcotics uncovered by the canines exceeded $3.1 billion. The dogs detected approximately 417,762 pounds of marijuana, 888 pounds of hashish, 48,238 pounds of cocaine, 326 pounds of heroin, 335 pounds of hash oil, 213 pounds of opium, 303,380 drugs (pills, capsules, etc.), and $12,021,142 in currency.

They only have a few specificly trained dogs to go after certain types of pills, but those focus mostly on Extacy. I think the pills they did seize were either amphetemines or opiates. Benzo's and the likes are safe from dogs as far as I know. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. You would think that at the moment they're training almost all dogs for anti-terror stuff (radiation, explosives, ect).

I have a hemp hat and hemp shoes. Am I safe from dog attacks?

Did anyone else see the episode of "Cops" where the officer was pounding on the car dash as the dog was just looking dumb? He finally got the dog to stand up to see what he was doing, and said, "the dog alerted on the dash". I can't believe the cops are so stupid to sign a release for the videos that show them doing outrageous things. Makes you wonder what they do cut, huh?

Lol - I doubt these disciplined dogs are the types of dogs that are of the vicious variety..ie.. Pit Bull, Chow, etc..

In any event.. thanks for the info. all.

I caught that episode of cops too. Some of the reasons people get pulled over are just stupid. If they have enough free time to pull people over a broken tail light like the cops episode a couple of weeks ago, then we either have too many cops and not enough crime which of course is stupid when gangs are just running our streets in the open and doing goodness knows what.

Please don't think I'm advocating drug abuse; this is just an interesting story.

I knew a marijauna dealer in the navy who always got a heads-up when they were going to bring the dogs to the barracks. He would sprinkle a line of coke across his door jamb. Of course, the drug-addicted dog would snort it all up and his nose would be useless for a couple of days.

This is obviously from someone who knows nothing about how cops operate. Hummmmm...maybe cops stop people for equipment violations to get at gang members and drug dealers inside of the cars. Remember we do live in the United States with that "Constitution". Which means you have to have a reason to stop and detain someone, even if they are a gang member or drug dealer.. Hope this helps out.

There is going to be a drug sniffing dog on Fox News cable in a few minutes - I'll let you know how he does.

Edited to add: The dog's trainer said 99% of what the dogs are trained for is co***ne and her***ne, but they are also trained to sniff out marijuana, Ecstasy and meth. Cute puppy, tore the box totally apart

Yes I do know that in some instances cops pull people over who they suspect as being less than lawful over something silly as a taillight. Thanks for the heads up, I wouldn't have known if you did not tell me.

Knak- I agree too much big brother anymore.

Sorry I know I am a tad off topic.

If you will do a little homework, you'll find out that in Florida, during the 80's, cops were told to look out for people who drove with exceptional care (maintaining the speed limit, not driving erratically, etc) . Said that this was a sign of a smuggler. So it just goes to show you that we are all suspects in this day and time.

Hi Moonbeam, In 1996, while driving home from FT.Worth,Tex to my home in Kentucky, I got profiled on the interstate for the reasons you gave. I was a 42 year old male, never an arrest in my life and my driving was perfect! They saw me pass while they sat in the media, pulled out, trapped me behind a Semi, pulled me over and said I was following the semi to close. That was true as they trapped me behind it and the speed had dropped to 40mph when they lit me up.I spent 4 hours on the side of the Interstate as they disassembled my car. While they took apart my car, one of the drug cops said they stopped me because I was doing 63 in a 65 and clean cut men riding alone was near the top of their profile sheet. They found nothing, the dog got so tired sniffing that eventually they left with him. Don't believe for a second that they wait for a reason to pull me over and detain me on the side of the interstate. They created the traffic infraction but never mentioned it again after beginning the search. The police know all the minor rules/laws that they all fall back on if they just want you to pull over and let them search. I was humiliated to say the least. That's been my only encounter with the police and it was for driving safe?? If they want you, they will make a reason to get you. Soc

SOC; did you give them permission to search? I'd never do that.

Well according to that criteria they'd be pulling over my mom and my aunts all the time.
How UTTERLY ridiculous. So here's a primer: Speed, weave through traffic, risk the lives of pedestrians, and you won't look suspicious.
Honestly our justic system is weirder and more illogical by the day.
I better start telling my Mom to speed though I don't think she has it in her!!!
