Went to the Dr today and started me on 30mg MS-Contin 2X/day today. It is already 12 hours after mt first dose and don't think I need to take another today. I used to take 3-6 norco a day and not get near this pain relief. I think the quality of my life has increased exponentially.
I can't wait to hit the trails of the Desolation Wilderness (it's practicly in my back yard.) And the brownies in the hike in "catch and release section" of the East Carson River better watch out. After 4 years on the side lines I'M COMING.

Repeat after me:
"I will take my medicine as prescribed."
Okay, now, actions speak louder than words.
Take your meds as prescribed. MS-Contin is a whole different universe from hydro. I'm glad you fell better but you don't want that analgesia to be ripped out from under you unaware. Trust me, it's a really nasty thing when you MSContin stops working. The whole idea of pain management is to never let that happen. With XR meds you must take your next dose before your last wears off.

Toe is quite right. The point of extended relief is to arrive at pain control and stay there so that you don't have to play "catch up". Once you are in pain it takes more medication to relieve the pain. This applies to chronic pain, where you can count on the constant pain recurring.
Even with acute painful conditions, it is better to take medication before your pain is out of control. If a person waits too long, it is very hard to acheive a comfortable level with normal doses.
So in the long run, you take less medication because you require less medication if you take it on a regular schedule. (Provided you have an adequate dose.)
Congrats, and good luck!

Hmmm... I wouldn't know about XR meds, however, I take my hydro and other meds on an as needed basis. 1) I don't want to build up a tolerance and 2) why take them if you don't need them? Just my thought.

I have been PMed that the perceived extra effectivnes of the MS-Contin that I am experiencing at the moment will not last more than a few days. The pain I have has been constant for more than 4 years so I don't think it will go away and I do know that it is easier to get pain relief before the pain really sets in. It would also be more difficult to play catch up with a controlled release med. The trouble is that I do feel more "medicated" than usual and do not feel safe to drive. I'll give it a couple of days and talk to the Doc. They do make a weaker (15mg) version of this med. They are so small though it would be difficult to split them.

Just my 2 cents- as I am sure many people at this site know, you should never split a timed-release med. Remember-that dose is designed to be released gradually over a 12 hour period and you DONT want to take all that medicine at once I took 10 mg oxycontins after a horrible fracture of my femur in a car accident. They were a godsend. Anyway, my point is, titrate the dose with your doc and don't break oxycontins up in a well-intentioned but potentially dangerous attempt to "cut back." I, too, am so happy you are getting the relief you need for your pain.

Congratulations Thomas, I am so glad to hear that you finally found something that works for your pain.
Also catmom is right, do not split your time-relase meds, or they will release al at once.
I was on oral morphine for almost 9 months, am now using the duragesic patch. I do think that morphine worked much better. I have only been on patch for 6 days, I called my Dr this morning and left a message, about switchng me back.
Anyways good luck TLT

Hi,
I also started MsContin(15mg) about a month ago,and thought it was a Godsend too.Unfortunately, that didnt last long, and now,it's as if I'm not taking them at all I told my PM dr about it,and he wanted to take me OFF my hydro's,and just give me 30mg of MsContin I said,"Um,no,I'll just stick w/these& leave things as they are."I know I'm lucky to have a pain clinic that even gives me hydro&mscontin, but now they seem to be"cracking down" on my pain meds, while telling me they will do what it takes for me to avoid joint replacement surgery.
Anyway,do NOT cut your pill in half-that could lead to an overdose!!!!!
Take care, and I hope yours continues working for you!

I was told that the current effects I am experiencing with the MS-Contin (feeling over medicated, actually high) will subside in a few days. I hope the analgesia I get from it will not be reduced for a while.
I am not planning to cut the tabs in half and just wait to get adjusted to them, but you bring up an interesting issue. I would think that the extended release properties of this and other E.R. meds would be more involved then just having a wax coating on the outside of the tab. Have taken Perdurtas before and there are many different colors of codeine mixed in the tab, like the "tiny time pills" in Contact. There must be some type of micro-encapsulation with varying breakdown periods in the MS-Contin.
