Since I acually was told to look inside that tall thingy that comes with the monitor and keyboard/mouse when I reinstalled, I am less scared than I used to be of the hardware. If you are getting braver, this is a good article, too, just to kinda know what you are looking at:
http://www.bcentral.com/articles/komando/131.asp
The keywords here are GROUNDING and ELECTRIC SHOCK that can KILL you.
Otherwise it looks pretty easy!

Prettyday good point!
ESD=electrostatic discharge and is the reason to be sure you are grounded if you need to get into your computer's case.

Hiya Prettyday!
Great article! Thanks!
Yeah, I was even brave enough(and goofy enough) to open my tower a few months back. Just unplugged everything, set it on my desk and just started fiddling with it. HAH! I don't recommend this, however,I have since learned about being grounded first.
I reckon my angels were watching over me that day too!

There are no high voltage capacitors in your computer. If it is unplugged, you will not get hurt. You can, however, hurt your computer if you start touching things without being grounded.
Your monitor is another story. If you go poking around in there it can seriously hurt you, even hours after you have unplugged it.

prettyday, Thanks, I moved a computer the other day to my mother's hose, and when I got it all hooked up, got a boot failure message. I tool back off computer and checked for any loose connections, although I didn't get shocked, it would have been nice to know that I could have!!
Thanks TLT

Power company was messing around with the power poles around my house and that night my computer was fried. $250 new motherboard, processor and repair bill... never told me that they would be turning the power on and off... I probably wil never get them to pay for it.

Plus when I took my computer in to get repaired, the guys went through all of my files and basically played with my computer for two days. When I would call them to pick it up, they kept saying were doing windows updates, for 2 days? Yeah right. I didn't think that they would go through all of my personal files, play all of my games, etc.... and charge me an extra $100 than they had quoted me. What a deal.

reminds me of the time I had to have the power company come out and replace a meter someone killed with a rifle. The power was still on and the meter was stopped, but I figured they would find out eventually, so I called them. This was at a telephone switch room out in the boonies. It was a nice day and I had the doors open for fresh air and was working on the computer next to the door. The whole place ran on batteries and inverters. So the power guy kept coming up to the door to tell me he was going to shut down the power and I kept telling him to go ahead. I guess he finally figured I was an idiot and cut the power. I could see them out by the pole staring at me while I continued typing away. Before they turned the power back on they came in the building and looked all around in amazement at the computers and overhead lighting that kept working fine without their commercial power. I love messing with people's (small) heads.

DTZNuff try using a surge protector to prevent that from happening again they are fairly cheap i think about 11 bucks. And lumber you are right about being grounded you can mess up your motherboard among other things, but i would recomend using a pair of electrostatic gloves so if you do need to change anything in your PC you dont let any static hurt your PC. Well hope this helps in some way....heath
