...is now getting all of his medications sent from an op in Canada. My mom called last night and told me what all of us here on db already know...that American pharmaceutical companies (and insurance I suppose too) are getting richer at our expense. My grandpa has been taking two blood pressure meds, one for gout, and a couple others (I think 6 or 7 meds daily) which has been costing him alot of out-of-pocket money. Like many of our nations elderly, he is on a fixed income (pension and social security) and really cannot afford the astronomically costs of prescription meds anymore. So...my grandmother heard of a Candian op that could ship his meds to his door at half the price of what he would get here in America (California). I think that it is a shame that this is what it is coming to. It is one thing for me to complain (at 30 years old) about my medication costs, but a 91 year old man on a fixed income who can barely get out of his chair?!?! GRRRR! Pisses me off to no end! Sorry for the vent, but....

Hi Lils:
My mother lives in a building for seniors (assisted living if you will). She told me that just the other day, there was a seminar held by a representative of a Canadian pharmacy. He stated that the seniors could get their meds at half the price going through this Canadian pharmacy.
Yes, it's a shame, and a negative reflection on the American drug companies, but at least it's available for seniors on a fixed income !

Actually this is available for anyone who wants cheaper medications. There are a ton of these sites around. You have to provide a legitimate prescription (some that I saw wouldn't take scripts for controlled meds) which is reviewed by a Canadian doctor who would write his own Canadian prescription and send it to the pharmacy, who would send it to the customer.
[edit] Here is an excerpt from the site Canadapharmacy.com:
How to order Prescription Drugs:
Choose items and place them in your shopping cart.
When you checkout you will be asked to create an account and fill out a brief patient profile.
Follow the steps to complete your purchase.
Fax or mail the prescription from your Doctor and also a piece of a picture ID (Driver License) to us.
Your Doctor's prescription will be reviewed and re-written by a Canadian Doctor and dispensed by our Pharmacy.
[edit]
This is from their faq page:
4. Do you sell narcotics?
No, it is illegal for a Canadian pharmacy to mail a narcotic or controlled substance to a US resident.

I'm also on a small, fixed income, due to injuries and medical problems. There are many times that I go without my basic maintenance meds because there simply isn't money for them. I'm tired of supporting the drug companies and their reps and their names, but sometimes one doesn't have a choice. It makes me wish I had been more vocal and informed when I was in my 20s and 30s, I might have been able to help in some way. But it's not too late, everyone, we DO have voices, but if we don't use them, the government and the drug manufacturers will never hear us.
Take Care,
Toky

There was something on our local news the other night about Canadian pharmacies. They were letting the elderly know about Canadian pharmacies and how it can save them a lot of money by having their doctor call in their prescriptions to one of these pharmacies and getting their meds by mail. Maybe if more and more people start doing this the legit way our government may do something about the prices of meds here? One can dream anyway can't they? LOL

Unfortunately the drug companies are on to this too. They are threatening to not sell to Canadian pharmacies that sell to Americans. I believe the leader in this travesty was Pfizer. Expect this (Canadian Drugs) to come to a halt and tell the older folk to get all they can now.

God bless mslily's grandfather and all the other seniors (and others) looking abroad for their meds.
Yes, one of the big pharmaceutical companies is making a big deal about the Canadian pharmacies. The drug companies have huge lobbies and even bigger budgets. They have a lot at stake. But, like Toky says, we all need to do something about this. There is no reason anyone any place on this earth should have to sacrifice food, shelter or anything just to buy maintenance medicine.
Of course, I do believe capitalism is great. If we can't change our government, we can change our actions and reactions. If the big US drug manufacturers stop selling to the Canadian pharms, there will be others to take their places. For example, Imported Drugs or OffshoreRX or all the other ones that sell generics will probably see a big increase in business if the Canadian pharms can't sell the brand names. And there are plenty of meds that aren't off patent here but are overseas, so it's fair game. We just have to convince our loved ones that buying a generic med from overseas is okay and, more importantly, safe.
