This is so ridiculous! I mean, suppose you have a regular Dr. who prescribes pain meds. Now suppose it is a Sunday night and u go to the ER with a migraine or a broken leg or something and u get a script there. The Dr. is obviously a different Dr. than your Primary one and u most likely will use the Hospital Pharmacy since you are already there..... One has nothing to do with the other and I think it is ridiculous that the DEA could call or come knocking accusing you of wrongdoing!!!
This exact sitaution happened to me before (not the DEA calling, but the ER visit) ...in fact, I think I am the one that originally started this thread and this stuff just burns me up!
Thanks for letting me vent, guys, I feel better now........
PS!!!!! Actually, here is part of MY post about the ER visit and being questioned about it:
"It then appears that Dr. #1 took it upon themselves to call a few other chain DrugStores to "enquire" about me..... they did note that over the summer I had a script for 10 Vikes filled at a Fred Meyer pharmacy (that was due to an ER visit on a Sunday) and a script filled also at the Fred Meyer for Lorezepam (from my Psychiatrist for anxiety) and on the last page of my records, it is written (and I quote) "future requests for Vicodin will be denied, drug seeker."
I am so glad I have a new Dr. now who so far, is very nice.........

You know, I have been reading this and have been an ever increasing state of panic...What exactly does the prescription monitoring program do? I live in Washington state, and I know the computers are linked to insurance, but I've never heard of the state checking up. The reason I ask, is that several years ago I did something pretty bad concerinig a prescription, and got caught. I paid my dues beleive me, but I wonder if there is a "red flag" on my name now? I have never had any problems filling prescriptions, and no pharmacy has ever said anything to me, but I wonder if that info is in the computer somewhere. Im also wondering if they could tell my current doctor about that incident. Maybe thats why he's been acting funny lately. Im scared now.

A monitoring program is simply a database maintained by the state government that scans prescription information, looking for people receiving CS meds of the same type (pain, anxiety, etc.)from more than one doctor within the same time period. The database of criminal records is an entirely different animal, and they'd have no reason to cross-link them. In states with a monitoring program, they know they'll be able to catch anyone who is DDing anyway, so they have no need to see if you've been in trouble in the past.
As for the issue of patient privacy between HCPs, a doctor could possibly justify "calling around" to other doctors and pharmacies and defend against a charge of violation of privacy by claiming that a patient's request for a certain drug is "probable cause" for suspicion of "unlawful intent" on the part of the patient (doctor shopping). These doctor shopping laws specifically exempt all doctor/patient communication from any protection, and I would bet it extends to the mere suspicion (of doctor shopping) as well.

Mayhem123 raises an interesting question.
Yes, what happens if you're seen in the E.R. on a Sunday night and prescribed painkillers, then seen by your regular doc the next day (Monday) and prescribed painkillers again?
I have been in this situation before, and I will tell you that it is up to the discretion of the pharmacist whether to fill for you or not.
My pharmacist told me that my insurance would not cover the cost of the painkillers on Monday because I received them on Sunday (I used my insurance and gave a co-pay).
I then (brazenly, I must admit) asked "Well, can I just pay cash for them then?"
His answer has always been "YES."
(Remember that sign that McDonalds used to have [I'm takin' ya' back to the 60's, now] that would say "1,000,094 hamburgers sold!" Then for every hamburger they sold, they would adjust the quantity on the sign? Yea, I've always felt that my "large chainstore pharmacy" should put one in place saying "1,000,094 prescriptions sold-1,000 sold to Beetlenut."
Please let me clarify. I'm simply not Miss Universe, just rather have been plagued with medical problems my entire life! Believe me-my pharmacist likes my business.

Colorado is obviously a bit different than some of these other states.
I know here in FL, prescription meds can only have a refil of 3 or less. And every one of them has a specified time frame of use.
I take midrin regularly, and have been taking it for 9 months now. 30 caps are supposed to last me 15 days (hahahaha!!). The pharmacy can be closed for handing it to me a day sooner than that. And it has nothing to do with insurance either.

I know I'm late with replying, but every time I see where someone has had "future requests for Vicodin will be denied, drug seeker" put on someone's chart by someone who doesn't know their @ss from a hole in the ground, it ticks me off ROYALLY! I wish they could be sued for slander for doing that when it is NOT called for, to someone who is NOT a "drug seeker" or addict. Your case was NOTHING to have them write THAT about you! Ticks me off...just wish we could do something about the idiotic "professionals" who are so quick to pass judgment when they don't even KNOW the person OR their entire history, yet deem themselves worthy to "blacklist" someone. @sses....GRRRR!!!!!!
Take care all...

This is crazy the way people are watched. I have had simular and ongoing problems like this. I had a rx for 60 vicodin to last me 30 days. got home and i didn't count them until the next day there were 13 missing. I tried to complain but They said II should have counted that day. so now when i get a scritp filled the manager is the only one to fill it and he always looks at me like I am an addict. it is (this is a major chain rx store) I seem to get this respose from any of rx store in my town now. they make me feel like I am doing something wrong.
