I ordered from an IOP back on January 2nd, 2004. The shipment was sent Express Mail via the USPS. I never received my package so the IOP re-shipped and that one was received at a different address. I asked the IOP what happened to the first shipment and they insisted it had been seized by U.S. Customs. Well.. low and behold, I have a delivery notice today, over 4 months later, stating they attempted delivery of that very same original package.
What gives? Anyone ever had this happen before? I am dumbfounded as to why I am receiving this now and a little anxious in picking it up (as in I don't know if I should). Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

It might have been held by customs for some time and then released. If you received a notice about delivery I wouldn't worry too much as its already passed through customs at that point. Otherwise you'd be getting the infamous U.S. Customs seizure notice.
I'd say you have little to loose by picking it up. In the unlikely event they start asking questions when you get there, just play stupid like you don't know what it is but you have friends oversees who may have sent you something. My guess you'll have no problems, however.

Thanks.. that's reassuring. I have a friend picking it up for me since I'm at work all day and cannot. I explained to him what was going on and he was ok with it. Regards.

Sometimes they'll empty the package and put a seizure notice inside. It's their way of saying Hi, Good to Know Ya.

I had one from dec that just arrived via express mail/usps and I knew it was being held in customs but my postman also knows I order my medicine and he called me to tell me it was in and I went up there and we both looked at the package and low and behold it said FDA Approved and was sealed back and everything was there. I finally do have a script but my insurance will not cover it for another year(pre-existing condition) so I will keep ordering ambien from a cheaper source until my insurance kicks in. My postman says people order all kinds of stuff and he doesn't care. So I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Interesting.. Well I had a friend pick-up the package, since I had to work, and he knew full well what it may be. The package was stamped red "FDA EXAMINED BUT NOT OPENED". Lol? Huh? It had been torn apart and taped back together - all meds intact. That's like saying, 'x-rayed but no operation' I suppose. Scary circumstances.. I'm glad everything turned out ok but I think I'll stick to my US OP. Thanks all for the input

Don't get too paranoid. Worse case scenario, if customs seizes it your out the cost of the meds. More than likely however, the IOP will give you the option of reship or refund.
It is HIGHLY (like 99.9%) unlikely it would ever escalate any further than that. Especially for something as innocuous as Ambien.
The general rule with seizures is customs basically puts the burden on the shipper. It is extremely hard to prove you actually ordered something. You can always play stupid and say you have no idea who or why someone shipped it to you. Especially if, as most of the better IOPs do, they ship in a plain envelop with no information identifying you as the person who ordered it (other than the ship to address).
Just dont pursue a seizure and you should be fine with IOPs.

Order sent via USPS express mail in February was held in customs as "being processed, no further informatiom available" arrived today. Package marked "FDA examined but not opened" although it had clearly been opened. Contents intact and all accounted for. Strange.
Anybody else have this happen recently?

As a customer service guy for an IOP, I know all about that issue -- once in a while a package will sit in customs for way longer than the rest of the packages from that period, and eventually gets released. We'll re-ship if the client doesn't get it 30 days after the ship date, which means the client could end up getting duplicate packages. This is why shipping methods with tracking are a better way to go.
