I have a cousin in Oklahoma and she is on a prescription for 90 xanax a month from a MD in her town.
She see's him every three months and he writes her a script of 90 with 2 refills each time.
She has had some panic attacks and the doctor has written a few more scripts since the visits have been more frequent now, close to two months apart.
She just got 90 filled about 4 days ago, and has one refill on the bottle and went to see the Dr today and he wrote her a paper script after an hour office visit for 90 with two refills.
Could she take her paper script to another pharmacy and get it filled the same time the one prescription was at another?
She is not dr shopping or anything. She is losing her insurance 12-31-03(COBRA), since losing job, and thought it could be a good time to stock up on a couple extra scripts until another insurance plan is found.
Do the scripts come back to the Dr? I don't think class 4 medications are monitored in Oklahoma.
Does anyone know the laws regarding scripts written by the same dr. This is a doctor that is not known for writing prescriptions out for addicts. She has suffered panic attacks and has been on anti depressants and other anti anxiety medications for the last 10 years.
Would appreciate any input. She called me and I told her I was unsure.

If she pays cash at a different pharmacy she probably wont have a problem. If the insurance is picking it up she may.
Thats an awful lot to be filling and if a legal issue did arise it may include an intent to distribute charge, (say there was a problem and she was never charged with intent to distribute the assumption that shes distributing would most likely be in the back of the prosecution and or judges mind)
A few options: she can bring the script to the same pharmacy she had the original filled at and have them put it on hold, or explain the situation to the pharmacist and ask him his advice. She can pay cash at another pharmacy, or if she needs to use her ins. bring it to a smaller privately owned one, drop it off at a busy time of the day, and before picking it up call a head while giving them plenty of time to fill it.

Thanks, It would really only be 180 xanax that would need to be filled at one time. Insurance would not be used on second if done. I am thinking it isn't worth the risk.
When a person has been on that medication for 10 years, I cant see any posssesion with intent.

I'm thinking that Xanax (alprazolam) is a sched. 3 narcotic but anyway, schedule drug scripts are good for six months, in Oklahoma. (This six month time frame also includes any refills. You have to use all of the refills within six months or the script becomes void.) The previous reply is right on the mark, if an insurance company is involved. It has been my experience that if you get a new script and submit it "early" based on an old script's cycle, many insurance companies will pay for it because it is a NEW script and script number. Generic Xanax is pretty inexpensive so you would probably be better off to just pay cash for it at a different pharmacy. (Do not use a national drug chain like Rexall or Wal-Mart, etc. as your insurance - and who knows what else - is entered into a national database.) I'd use an independent pharmacy, if this is a one time deal. Hope that helps.

Xanax is schedule IV. Intent to distribute would almost certainly have to take an UC investigation, the drug itself quartered into separate containers/baggies, other circumstances I'm sure - sharing with friends, etc. Large quantities of any medication should not be a problem, given you have a necessary medical condition which requires its therapeudic scheduling.
