Chronic Pain Pervasive in All Age Groups, New Study Shows
Thursday September 4, 12:00 pm ET
More than Half of All Americans Suffer Chronic or Recurring Pain

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- New poll results show that more than half of all Americans (57 percent) have suffered chronic or recurrent pain in the past year. Surprisingly, younger people (18-34) were only slightly less likely than older Americans to be in pain. The impact of pain is experienced by three out of every four surveyed (76 percent), who are either suffering from pain themselves or have a close family member or friend who suffers.
Research!America, a not-for-profit, public education and advocacy alliance, sponsored the nationwide survey timed to be released during September, which is National Pain Awareness Month.

Other key findings:

* Of the 57 percent who suffered from chronic or recurrent pain in the
past year, 62 percent have been in pain for more than a year and 40
percent report being in pain all the time.

* Four out of 10 (39 percent) chronic pain sufferers have had to make
major adjustments in their lives, including taking disability leave from
work; changing jobs; requiring help with daily activities such as
bathing, dressing and eating; or moving into housing that is easier to
manage.

* 67 percent of those surveyed believe a cure for chronic pain is at least
10 years away.

* 57 percent are willing to pay one dollar more each week to increase
federal funding for pain research.

* 42 percent say American culture views pain as more of a weakness than a
misfortune.

"This survey should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans -- including our elected leaders -- that chronic pain is a problem of epidemic proportions in our country," said Mary Woolley, president of Research!America.

James Campbell, MD, chair of the American Pain Foundation, agrees that the survey reveals a widespread misunderstanding of both the prevalence and the debilitating effects of pain in our society. "These poll results show that pain is a pandemic health problem," Campbell said. "In a society where we can do heart transplants and treat AIDS, severe pain should no longer be acceptable. Perhaps most importantly, the poll demonstrates that pain research needs more emphasis and funding so that we can improve the quality of life for countless Americans."

Campbell is also professor of neurosurgery and director of the Blauststein Pain Treatment Center at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center.

The nationwide random telephone survey was conducted for Research!America among 1,004 adults July 15-19, 2003, by Peter D. Hart Research Associates. The data's margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points among all adults at the 95 percent confidence level. Research!America is dedicated to making medical and health research -- including research to prevent disease, disability and injury and to promote health -- a much higher national priority. Through the strength of its diverse and far-reaching membership, Research!America provides a unified link between the voice of the citizens who strongly support research and local, state and national opinion leaders and decision makers.

What an excellent post, FLYGIRL!!!
It did not make me happy to see how much we are not alone, but it made me feel like slightly less of a loser when I had a hard time taking a shower this morning.
Everytime I go thru one of the extremes I have been going thru all the days of my life, I feel like an alien. Having someone take the time to post these studies validates my situation. That is an accomplishment I cannot always pull off.
Thank You.

42% of Americans view pain as a weakness rather than a misfortune. I believe it! Although I have debilitating chronic back pain, I rarely let on to anyone (with the exception of my husband) that I have pain at all. If you have pain you are either a whiner, complainer, someone trying to seek attention, etc. It is a hopeless situation when you look at just the perception people have of chronic pain sufferers. What a shame!

Disheartening would be an understatement
I wonder what percentage of pain patients view that majority as possessing weakness in the form of apathy...
You have to admit though, the numbers jive right up with the diminishing number of people that give a crud about their fellow man anymore. Fantastic.

mslily, I almost envy you that you have a husband that does not belong to the 42%, my husband on the other hand does belong to that 42%, granted there are some times he does exhibit some form or empathy towards me,not to often. I am not whining here, just stating that I sure do believe that statement. I think it is great you have an understanding husband, that can make a world of difference in how you have to deal with your pain. Support can make a difference. I think alot of those 42% of people are flat on their backs when pain does hit them, and if they be stricken with chronic pain they would not be able to deal with it. I do the same as you do, I put on a face when I have to regardless of how I am feeling, I have learned there is just no point in trying to explain to those people, my mother in law is also one of those, she continually tells me if I would just take 1 light coat aspirin I would not have any problems, when I have tried to explain she just shakes her head and tells me how when she was young she had to walk 5 miles to school, uphill both ways in the snow and fight the grizzlies of with her looseleaf notebook. So.... I should just toughen up!

Chevygal,

Yes, my husband does have empathy towards me but he really just thinks that once we are done having kids that I should just have back surgery as a kind of "cure all" and be done with it. Life is not that simple, I am afraid. My mom had surgery on a couple of her discs and still has chronic pain (as do alot of people on this board). I'm not holding my breath for a miracle. My husband just doesn't want to keep shelling out over $100 a month on my meds. I don't blame him, but I have to be functional to take care of a two year old you know?! As for your mother-in-law suggesting that you take an aspirin to mask your pain...sounds alot like my MIL. Completely and without any clue! I would love it if I could get by on tylenol 3...not happenning anytime soon here, though!

I've had four back surgeries..3 spinal fusions...and while at least I believe two of them were necessary to preserve function...it's no guarantee they'll do anything for the pain...because surgery, if done early in the pain process is effective....studies suggest that the same neuro pathways that develop that allow a 1 year old the "memory" to rise up & walk, also develop with regard to pain...once those pain pathways develop...they are there...and not going anywhere...so kind of your husband to think when the baby factory is closed down he'll "allow" you this wonderful option! Geez!
