I know this is coming in late, but I think the generic for Midrin is "duradrin" (likely spelled somewhat differently). I took Midrin for two years when I discovered it as a "wonder drug" for my migraines (nothing else had worked). After a couple of years it stopped working - just like that. Worked one day, never worked again after that. Very strange.
Anyway, after much experimenting with Zomig, Cafergot, Imitrex, all the levels of hydro as well as the paracetamol/codeine tablets (which worked the best of all that bunch) I finally found Fioricet and it's been a fantastic life saver for years now.
It's like gold, though for some reason - the price tends to skyrocket every now and then without ever getting cheap again. I don't know what that's all about. However, there are no jitters or other sort of "speedy" response. As the prior poster stated - the butalbital and caffeine work together to cancel the other's effects on the nervous system. I don't know what I'd do without them.
The downside is that if you have cluster/chronic headaches and take this frequently you are apt to get "rebound" headaches caused by the caffeine (much like coffee drinkers who stop drinking coffee) and that's something very real to consider for those with very bad headache symptoms. It's worth the trade off for me and for others, too I'm sure. I just wanted to add my small bit of experience in case it should help.
