Chandler fires officer in fatal shooting of fraud suspect

A Chandler police officer accused of second-degree murder and endangerment in the shooting of an Ahwatukee Foothills woman was fired.
The firing announced late Wednesday came as Officer Dan Lovelace made his first court appearance in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Lovelace is accused in the Oct. 11 death of Dawn Rae Nelson, 35, at a Walgreens drive-through in Chandler.
"We look forward to having this trial," said Craig Mehrens, Lovelace's lawyer.
Prior to the shooting, Lovelace was trying to question Nelson about allegations involving a forged prescription.
Lovelace told detectives he shot Nelson because he thought she was trying to run him over with her car, according to a police report.
Witnesses said he chased the car before shooting and evidence shows the bullet came from behind Nelson, the report states.
With her 14-month-old son in the back seat, Nelson left the drive-through and knocked over Lovelace's parked motorcycle.
