Unfortunately, people who are not versed in the field of dentistry are unawares to what is going on and accept the Dentist's word at face value. There are some dentists who will tell you something is wrong that isn't and will charge you for work which really doesn't need to be done. A few years back, my sister was seeing a dentist who had her come in time and again for issues that seemed neverending- she finally told me what her problem was and what the dentist suggested and I suggested she see another dentist- because from what I could gather (granted I didn't have access to her xrays nor was I looking in her mouth), she was being raked over the coals.

She saw another dentist who told her exactly what I did- she was being asked to allow the dentist to do unnecessary work.

It can happen. But there are also good dentists out there. You just need to find a good one.
