I'd stay away from Xanax simply because the withdrawal can be particularly vicious, even for someone who has only been on them a month or two. Klonopin seems to be much longer acting, and you can taper off them again much more easily than Xanax. Valium is okay, it's longer acting that Xanax, and the withdrawal is a little easier to deal with.
I do understand the problem you have, as I have it too. (Not good for the job I am in!) I found Paxil an acceptable substitute for Benzos, although it does take a couple of weeks to really kick in properly. Tapering off Paxil is quite easy. Done it myself with no problems at all. I took Paxil daily for 8 months and then tapered off them when I felt no further need of chemical help. I do keep some around though if the social anxiety gets a bit much.
