PM Doc for Migraines/TMJ?
      #95554 - 08/24/03 09:56 PM

Hiya,

Has anyone seen a Pain Management doc for migraines and/or TMJ? I really do not feel the treatment I am receiving from my neurologist and dentist are adequate. Has anyone gone to see a PM doc for this? Or is this the kind of the thing they tend to brush off?

Thanks,
-yawkaw

depends on the doc, i'd guess. as far as migraines, my "neuro" categorically wouldn't write for anything stronger than tyley3's -- and these only as a last resort after trying cafergot, midrin, imitrex, maxalt, et al. So I went to a clinic (no referral, or anything) and met an "old school doc" who wrote for oxy's! well, you can guess who is now my primary care physician. even so, i am careful not to refill that oxy script as often as i actually need to. which brought me to DB... bottom line, for me is, Nothing Completely and Reliably works against the miniature bearded dwarves with pick-axes who live and work in my brain...

Hey yawkaw,

I use to work for a dentist that specialized in TMJ. Your best bet would be to try and find a dentist who specializes in this area of practice as they know better than a DMD who specializes in general dentistry, ya know? That's, I guess, why they call them specialists As for how to find a dentist specializing in this field in your area, you might want to run through your yellow pages and if you're not successful there, ask your dentist. Or, I think 1-800-Dentist is still in business? Give them a call and tell them what sort of dentist you're trying to find- hopefully they can help Good luck!

My neurologist was also certified in Pain Management and he was a load of Best if kept off the board! Not ONCE did he ever ask me what medications I'm on. He did not address my complaints or questions and as a result of no help from him, I had to go to the ER twice, my doctor once, and an urgent care place once. 3 shots of demerol and one shot of stadol (lots).

I sure as hell hope you can find someone better than my luck has been.

What did your pmd do for you? Did he give you any meds or what was the therapy suggested? I am curious because I get migraines and have tmj which aren't as bad as the migraines.

This guy didn't do squat. He gave me another med that doesn't work. I thought I had hit the jackpot since he was a neurologist AND PM. But, he doesn't really seem to care about anything but shooting me with Botox. Didn't ask me, just said he was going to talk to the insurance co. I really think this guy is trying to run as many tests, etc. just to jack up his bill. He ran about 8 on my daughter, and she only has 3-4 migraines a month.

I'm sorry, I got off track there with a little vent.

No you are not off track at all. I had considered going to a PMD for my migraines, but I certainly would not want botox treatments either. I don't have a good family doc anymore either so I am sort of between a rock and a hard place.

All would be OK with me, if I hadn't have built up tolerance to the Stadol NS. I got by like that for 8 years. Now, it's like all h3ll has broken loose! 4 emergency shots in 5 days. We (me and my ride home) certainly can't do THAT every month!

I just hope this new neuro can help! I've got my list of meds from Dr. Hochman's site and have written on it what I have tried and why/how it didn't work. My list of questions is still on the back from the first neuro visit. So, I just wait......

I've been a migraine sufferer for 30 years...wow am I that old? Anyway, I've tried everything from aspirin to Dilaudid.
Have you tried fiorinal? Sometimes that works better for me than hydro. The problem for me is that it knocks me out so I can't take it during the day. But it may work really well for you. It is really great on tension headaches as well because of the barbituate in it.

Hi there -

I've had TMJ problems for a few years now as well, which brought me to drugbuyers. Even the local TMJ specialist would only give me Flexeril, which for some reason freaks me out and causes anxiety. He wouldn't, under any circumstances, give me any other medication that actually worked. The doctor who did, of course, was an Emergency Room doctor who prescribed percocet and valium. Of course, I can't get percocet from an OP, but I've found with the TMJ the medicine that works best is the Valium. I can only take it at night, because it really knocks you out, but it's a true muscle relaxer, and the only time I'm 100% pain free is after taking one of them. So give it a shot if you haven't already, and good luck - TMJ really sucks, I know.

I am right with you mrscoach, your post sounded like I wrote it. That's why I am here at DB getting as much info as I can and I suffer from migraines and back problems (only when I wack my back out) but the TMJ & migraines are the worst. PM if you would like to talk more, I would be interested in hearing your story.

I have seen an oral surgeon for the TMJ, gave me Vicodin for a few weeks because I could not eat, went back to dentist and had a night mouth guard made and that does not seem to help w/the headaches. I am thisclose to going to a PM doc cause I am sick and tired of taking pill after pill, I feel like a pill head, taking pills for migraines (pain) back pain when I throw the back out, pill for depression over all of this, stress from my job, high blood meds (I know due to job) customer service really stinks! I have applied for a less stressful job, and I am really feeling like a "pill head" at this point, take a pill and everything will be okay. NOT!!!

sara43 - I take norco 10/325 for my migraines. My tolerance is very high though - I have to take three per dose.

You poor thing. I know what you mean though. I take 6 pills a day, maintenance for high blood pressure, stomache ulcers, migraine prevention. If you're a pill junkie then I'm an ER junkie. Had to have emergency shots 5 times in the last 2 weeks. I never knew how much the Stadol NS really helped me stay out. But, that's over.

You mention taking your pills downstairs. You can't throw a few in your purse and take them while drinking some water or something. Perhaps the bathroom would work. Take them and then get a drink, no one would see you.

I don't have TMJ, but I do clench and grind my teeth. I actually wore down a bridge in the back of my mouth and just had it replaced. It was down to the metal and getting worse. I bought one of those mouth guards you do yourself, but it's hard to sleep with it in.

I hope you find the help you need and don't think of yourself as a pill junkie. You do what you do to survive.

*hugs*
