TOKY-You are absolutely right about being considerate to other people. Post office workers don't always have the best job in the world. But I have a two-fold problem. I'm never home to receive deliveries--mine are mostly registered mail from Thailand often sent in small amounts due to OP's rules not my request. So first the letter carrier has to write frequent "pink slips" with the "generic return address--Thailand" often several times in one week so I can pick up the packages at the PO. (They all seem to come at the same time no matter how I try to space them out.) Then I have 2 to 4 pink slips to bring to the post office at one time and sometimes get funny looks from the clerks. As people have said above, a card and cash has worked wonders with my letter carrier. On the other hand, I'm not so sure what to do in the Post Office since I'm required to go to the same Post Office Branch as my zip code. If I try and distract the clerks with conversation, they get flustered on signing off the packages. And the LAST thing I want to do is try to rush them. Anyone else with this problem or possible solutions? Thanks for your help!!

WOW! Floger, I wish I had something to deliver to you. What a bunch of yummies!
My USPS guy has triplets so I have given him movie gift certificates, food coupons......that kind of thing. UPS and FedEx usually just cash.
It is true that a kind word and warm smile can go so very far with these people. They are taken for granted by so many, yet we are so dependent on them. Can you imagine if a delivery person just got sick of it and decided to throw all their mail/packages into a dumpster somewhere? In just a few days they could create serious chaos! They are behind the scenes heroes.
I just wish I could put air conditioners in the UPS trucks..... I feel so bad for them in the summer.

I LOVE your answer beetlenut!
Personally, I get 1 to 3 packages a week. Most are stuff for my computer. On ebay I do not usually look at where it is coming from if it lists the bid in $US and has a set shipping cost.
I saw my mailman today. When he gave me my mail, I told him I was disappointed because I was waiting for something for my computer. I actually am. Really. I have enough meds to last me for a while. I don't need too much more than what I get from my doctor, but there are things that I like to have on hand just in case.

Just say thank you for delivering my "personal products"
that should do it. It's all in how you say it, and if you are or are not able to say it in such a way as to make the person smile. If they are nosy, just re-direct the conversation geez.
Make 'em smile. What else counts? Hear the new study that saying "I'm sorry" (when an apology is called for) actually
induces improved physical feelings/functioning? By the same token, making people smile does about the same thing.
It's just really a matter of how much you care. I show my regard for my mail carrier by keeping the mailbox lubricated, dry, easy to open and shut, keep the flag easy to retract and sanded down so fingers can't get cut. Put yourself in their shoes - that's empathy: one of the greatest virtues IMO.

And I'm sure they are mighty thankful for all that you do. I did have to laugh when I read that, imagining you lubricating the mailbox and all.

I guess I'm lucky that at the end of the street in my neighborhood, we have one large mailbox with mail slots for everyone. I guess I could make sure the keyhole is kept free of debris and grime and do a weekly cleaning of the inside of the box, ensuring it's kept shiny and dirt-free so dust doesn't blow in the mailman's face when he opens it up.

The first time I got a funny look from a mail carrier, I told them I was involved in several overseas missionary organizations through my Church, and often receive literature and other stuff from them...I will probably rot in Hell for this lie, but it seemed to satisfy the curiosity! LOL

I had the same question, given that I've had several items within 2-3 weeks from Thailand that I needed to sign for at my small post office. Last time when I went in there and handed the guy the registered mail card to pick up the item, he said "Oh I REMEMBER this one". I thought, oh Best if kept off the board. Then he brings it out (small envelope, pretty flat) and asks, "who do you know in Thailand?" I said, my cousin is over there for a while and that seemed to satisfy him. Maybe it's my paranoia, but I'm thinking about getting a Mailboxes, etc. box.
