Okay, I am about ready to disconnect my little tower and take it to the actual computer store where they can work on it; only worry is all OP activity...I got notices in my Email that I got Pms from here, lots, on Halloween, but when I log in, nothing. I just want to go on record and say that Service Pack 1 ruined my Dell and it has never recovered even after numerous reformatting....I am about ready to just start over after sending this one out where the spiny lobsters live.
So; if anyone sent me PMs, I am not being rude
And I keep hearing this sound like a really loud drop of water over my speaker...I am virus free... anyway. same old same old.
putting it out there if anyone else is experiencing this..

I believe if you go to microsoft they now have a service pack 2, that corrects the problems from service pack 1. Just make sure when you download it , you have nothing else running in the background. Good luck

Well, if it continues to have all these problems, even after really formatting then what you have is a hardware problem, which has nothing to do with service pack 1. And the sound with your speakers confirms that. The best thing to do is take it to a repair place and have them do a hardware diagnostic on it.

Hmmm, so far NO plonk this morning; did a sloooow reformatt last night....installled SP2; now, please kind friends
Seems Norton and Mc Afee are not the greats they once were and everytime I put Zone Alarm on, I regret it eventually
I guess I just need to put the basic on....not the Steganos or Pest Patrol;
so far
Panda
Avg
Spybot
ADAWARE
Are the ones I hear about....what do you all feel comfortable with considering the OP sites?
Thank you!

Pest Patrol uses the drop of water "Plonk" sound to indicate it just stopped or found a cookie ~ somehow, it's a perfectly tuned "Plonk" for annoying friends 'n co-workers too *s*

If you put both Nortons and McAfree on your puter they will conflict like crazy, use one or the other, I think Nortons is better. I also use adaware SE and spybot. Zone alarm is a pain in arse. After installing SE2 are you up and running now?

Yes I am, and yes, Zone Alarm did just slow things up. I will probably remove it after adding some other protection.
But the Sp 2 is nowhere as awful as the SP 1 was (so far)--some consolation...

Trash Norton and Mcaffee, uninstall that other [censored]. Keep Spybot (USE THE TEATIMER ALSO), and adaware. Zonelarm has a pro version you can grab off of usenet in a minute. The pro version has anti virus.
These are what you want to keep your system from slowing down to much.
But to cover your tracks (all least to normal onlookers) , goto webroot.com and download windows washer pro. (you can grab the full version of this off of usenet or irc also, and possible p2p)

Thank you! I am happy to hear that because I paid for the Zone Alarm package (too much but so paranoid with all id theft scares) and I would like to get their rebate, which I already qualify for, as opposed to their odd Steganos-pest patrol. I already paid for it (steganos & pest P.) but thats okay; I will chalk it up to lessons learned if I just don't reformatt ONE MORE TIME!!!!
Tea-timer? I will look that up to find out what it is...
Thanks everybody!!!

Yeah I cringe at that sound...no rhyme or reason to me when it happens, to a more educated PC user I am certain it would make solid sense!
Okay, off to try again.... thank you!!!

Okay, took immediate action; thought I would share; I have learned to install other programs before ZA Pro, seems to work better; and I am trying to figure out the Adaware protocol; when to remove, when to leave alone....I just quarantined all objects found until I watched my computer work (or not.)
Last night I could not even send an e-mail , so it has been another reformatting day; I know many people are going thru this and thought I might share that maybe this is why someone else is not receiving tracking e-mails, or???
Learning as I go, thanks again, PD

FYI, you can't use Microcrook Outlook with ZA on. I went through a long stubborn time of turning it off everytime I checked my e-mail before I buckled down and got Outlook Express.

Okay! something else good! I thought that Outlook Express was just extra; I will check it out....so far, so good, except that Spybot keeps finding the same DSO exploits and I keep clicking the same Solve button...sigh. I have to say so far that SP2 is a lot better, but I am looking into a Macintosh next time...Thank you Everyone and Toe, for sending back to those programs I have been studiously ignoring since they bit me the first time!!!
(This makes me sick. I am certain I have spent $300.00 over the last three years trying to fix or circumvent problems on my Dell that started with SP1.

Everytime I run Spybot I get the same DSO exploits too, always 5 of them. Have no idea why, but they are always there. But at least you don't have all the other junk that has been lurking in the background :-)

Are you sure it's service pack 1 causing the problems? I to had a dell. Known as our dell from hell. Even with the extended warranty they would not help us. They had us reformat 8 times in 5 days! We always got tech support in India and couldn't hardly understand them. On the last reformat the tech had us remove some file that wasn't suppose to be removed. With that and the fact that because of all the reformatting the windows disc got corrupt we now had an expensive door stopper. I called and talked to customer service and told them I wanted an address and name because I was going to take them to small claims court. He told me I could put it up for sale on their web site but I'd have to fix it first of course. :thumb-down: At my expense even though it was under warranty. They ended up sending us a check for $100 to take it to a shop to get it fixed. We had to pay for a new OS as they would not pay for that even though it was their fault the disc was no good. That check covered about 1/2 the cost to "fix" it. We were told we needed a new processing chip (?) but they would not do it. It would still not work right and even with it still under warranty, about 7 months left on it, they refused to fix it. All we could do on it was book keeping and some games, it was useless for the internet. We ended up buying a new puter, a compaq we got a killer deal on, and gave the dell from hell to my parents. My dad used it to keep the books from his shop.
NEVER will I have a dell again and I tell any one who is considering a new puter to STAY AWAY!

I got shut down again last week and I think I was back on again briefly as of Tuesday 11/9.....I too had the "you are stupid" techie help from wherever...I never got my rebate, they upsold me (Dell) probably about seven hundred more dollars more computer than I needed...and have never been ever ever able to use...I guess I would need that ZIP drive...I have gotten more help here from all of you than from the Microsoft or Dell sites....too bad...I should have supported the local economy and gone with Gateway, I guess,
or maybe next time a Mac...Everything happens for a reason, I know, but I hate to see how it just makes so many of us seethe!
