I have been on this drug for only 4-5 days .... it puts me to sleep but I have VERY vivid and strange dreams that seem to last into the morning while I stay in a sort of half-awake state still dreaming and replaying the strange scenarios in my head...
too soon to judge the anti-depressent properties of this drug but the dreams are really creeping me out...
any comments from other users or those informed would be appreciated
thanks

I tried this drug and experienced severe bruxism (teeth grinding). I was not aware of what you describe but trust me, bruxism is a common, and not pleasant, side effect of this drug.

I have actually taken this drug for about a year. I don't remember the vivid long lasting dreams that you are speaking about. But, I do have TMJ and I don't know if it is a result of grinding or not. The medication works very well with me. Just my opinion, don't know if it helps or not.

I had a horrible experience with Remeron. I only took it for a few days, but I couldn't remember what day it was and always felt very groggy.
Wellbutrin is the best!

I've been taking Zoloft for about 6 weeks and occasionally have very bad nightmares. . .grotesque, hideous, bizarre. . .to the point where I don't want to go back to sleep, even if the rest period has been insufficient. And the bad dreams set the tone of whole day -- not too good.
But I don't know if the antidepressant is the culprit. I imagine it could be side effects from any number of the other meds (mostly heart/cholesterol, plus the occasional Vicodin or Valium, and albuterol puff) that I consume. Maybe all of the above. Or I'm just a head-case. I don't know. But, yeah, the nightmares are giggly-ugly.
Sweet Dreams.

I actually just discontinued zoloft prior to starting the remeron...
so the nightmares could be a result of zoloft withdrawls, as I ease into the remeron doing it's thing...but who knows?
I never had bad dreams on zoloft, but did get them when I stopped smoking pot about three months ago...they have since subsided, but now are back even stronger starting on the first day i took remeron...
who knows how these drugs affect our sleeping/dreams?
they are never mentioned in the side effect profiles

Awful! I don't have bad reactions to much of anything, but the Remeron was so weird I can't even describe it...totally doped out, in the most unpleasant way, goofy, sleepy, but only sorta dozed, with bizarre semi-dreams. And I hadn't been taking anything else that might have interacted. My PMP had given me some samples, plus I filled a scrip. After 2 doses, I gave her back the samples And the scrip, told her she could do whatever with them. She was surprised, so I guess most folks are ok with it, but don't worry, you're not alone.

Remeron was a poor match for me. I felt like a zombie, even after sleeping 8 hours and getting up in the morning. The worst effect was ravenous hunger! I was in the hospital for much of the time I took it, and that still didn't stop me from eating everything in sight. I'd get hunger pains when I was so full I was sick to my stomach... it was crazy! I gained a pound a day for about a month and a half.
It's two years later, and I managed to take the weight off sensibly, but not before I'd topped out above 200 lbs on a 5'6" frame. I'm scared to death to be like that again... I was eating whole jars of peanut butter with a spoon on Remeron. I got a new shrink, and he was horrified that someone had let me continue that medication in the midst of weight gain like that. We have since tried other remedies for sleep and separate antidepressants.

Remeron never worked for me, I go for days without sleep so i tried it in desperation. it does cause lucid or vivid dreams. But I always hav nightmares when I sleep so I just figured that it was me. On certain meds I wake up and for a while I feel like I was feeling in my nightmare, I hate it. I can't seem to find a med that works well for insomnia. I am on zanax i was on diazapam but since I am on soma my doc switched me to zanax. It doesn't work for sleep but works well for panic attacks. I want a sleep med that doesn't cause weight gain. I am 6ft tall am 135 pounds. i am female so most docs say well you shouldn't worry about weight gain, you're thin. I used to be anorexic and weighed 80 pounds I almost died I am afraid that if I gain weight that I will start my anorexic habits again. Does anyone know of a med that is really good for sleep but does not cause weight gain?

DWS1,
you can ask your doctor about trazadone or vistaril...
trazadone is an anti-depressant that really helps with sleep and I do not believe it causes weight gain...if you are a female, you do not have to worry about priapism (painful, long-lasting erections) which is it's only dangerous side effect..
Vistaril is an antihistimine actually that also helps with insomnia and anxiety... it is supposed to be somewhat non-addicitive...
both worked for me, but now that I am on remeron, (we'll see for how long) I do not need either of these meds but still keep them around just in case...
I take low doses of Klonopin daily so it doesnt help with sleep like some other Benzos seem to for many members of this forum...
I'd look into those two I mentioned...good luck!!!

I looked up vistaril on rxlist it is a sed/hypnotic I was wrong about what it was. Maybe I should ask my doc for it since I haven't tried it before for sleep.

Vistaril is an antihistamine (also known as hydroxyzine), but it's prescribed for sleep/anxiety because it has sedative properties. It's kind of like taking a Benadryl (OTC), and never worked well for me. I'm also an insomniac, and if unmedicated I'll sleep every other night or so. I had a little success with Ambien, but it had some visual distortions as side effects that I found intolerable. It definitely helps as far as the insomnia, and doesn't directly affect your appetite, but some people find they binge after taking Ambien and don't remember in the morning. Ambien is an attractive choice because it isn't chemically addictive, stays in the body a short time (8-10 hours?), and isn't supposed to cause a tolerance.

I am wondering if the Xanax isn't what is causing your nightmares. I think it does that to me. I take a low dose because, darnit, I just can't FALL asleep. Ambien doesn't work for me like it does for some. After awhile I think the Xanax is what is causing my almost nightly bad dreams. Really stinks. I can't sleep and what I take to help me sleep causes horrible dreams. What to do?

sorry to hear about anyone else having nightmares on whatever they are using...
with me, I know it's the remeron because they started with the very first dose, and have continued each night...I have never experienced anything like them with any other medication...
they aren't even always really "nightmares", but the dreams have an indescribable intense quality that I have NEVER felt before...very weird!!
If they continue or get more bothersome, I will have to think about changing meds once again...(sigh)
For anyone else looking for a sleeping agent that doesn't (at least for me) cause vivid dreams, I really have to suggest trying out trazodone (desyril)...
They knocked out of me and I slept through the night every time without any negative side effects except for some grogginess the next morning...
worth looking into through your doc and if you search through this forum you will find many mentions of it's attributes.
