Shredding
      #194043 - 10/15/04 02:40 PM

In my virus software I discovered a Shredding function.

I have always heard that people have had thier computers confiscated and had information that they thought was deleted un-deleted and used as evidence against the computer owner.

Does the shredding function actually do what it says:' that is, takes all of the deleted stuff and takes it a step further by shredding the things I thought were deleted.

I know some of the things I want shredded are like abc/folder1/user/bin18843/etc..
My point being they are a mile long and I want to know if I have to somehow find these exact paths and folders in order to shred them.

I am sure this would be valuable to everyone here but if you are willing to help explain this to me either PM me for my e-mail address so you can explain it to me or direct me towards a link that would do the same.

Thanks
PJ

its bogus software. it'll make it undetectible to the normal user...but if somebody really wants that information there are ways.

Yes it can be gotten by LE. However if you were to fill your hard drive, reformatt and fill it with different info, then reformat and install again, you would lose the first set of info.(remember, you can not erase the logs off the net though

Or, you can buy a 40 giger online for about 30 bucks and install a second instance of windows on the second drive, keeping all information that you want to keep private on the second drive. Then remove it and hide it.

Spur of the moment-they-are-outside-banging-on-the-door , you are screwed anyway. If you would ever have to worry about LE taking your computer and seeing what you did (Not single person NR transactions) then you should have been using a different computer the whole time for things you dont want discovered.

Local law isnt going to be the ones (unless try to pick up some 14 year olds that turn out to be cops) that grab your computer for OP stuff. And in turn if the *boys* want you, they will first visit the site, grab logs from the NROP, check IP addresses. Then see that some IP's are visiting alot. By then they would have already gotten to your NROP, so they have all the records of sales. With those two items it's not going to be hard to convince a judge (er, i forgot patriot act, whats a judge!?) to get a warrant for Wire Intercept.

Save yourself the headache, use a public computer under an alias(remember!, dont go checking your other mail accounts, and IM'ing people). Or better yet Buy a used laptop cash of someone that CAN NOT ID you, grab a 802.11g'er, and drive to the local krystal's or tacobell (both hotspots in FLA at least) , park in the parking lot and do some damage! Your MAC address is going to be on your wifi card, so buy that cash as well.

This is advice to keep your privacy, not do anything illegal.

yeah juist dont do stupid stuff on yer own PC I AGREE. but I knew a guy 4 years ago who had nothing to do with anything online or OPS . had recieved PC from apretns month previously. He got arrested for something that had absolutely nothing to do with using hsi cpmuter or anything. He didnt even have internet access yet & the local sheeriffs took his PC as evidence even though he had seriously never used it for anything durg or anything illegal related. And of course there wasnt anything on it. but they took it anyways. In this age of everyone communicating via email and so many houses having PC's I think it'll get to the poinbt where they will search yer HD for any offense. But if I was gonan do anyhting illegal computer involved it would be in the enxt town over on a public PC. But I wouldnt do anything illegal int he first place

just my opnion on things

Those programs just "hides" them.
For instance, I had a program that I was trying out for some important info, I didn't like the program, when it was uninstalled and deleted it took my info with it.

I then found a program, that found everything that had been deleted, and supposedly destroyed, I was in shock, but felt good also that I found my info that was deleted by the other program.

Nothing leaves your computer, no matter what a program says it will do.

The best thing to do ultimately would be to formet the hard drive over and over again that way 1's and 0's get written over the drive in layers, but STILL that is not a fool proof way to get rid of data that you are afraid of be uncovered.

That's what these shredder programs do, they write over the data, once or more, depending on which option you choose.

Look for a program that gives you the option of high amount of overwrites. I think 30 something is the highest available, that u can buy.

Webroot Window Washer is a good product that offers that high amount of overwrites, and won't put any spyware/adware on your computer.
Free trial.

I'm a computer technician. What I'm saying is that those computer programs, I.E. window washer, norton system works etc... They're good for getting rid of data that you don't want the lay person to see but the best way to erase the data form the hard drive is to do multiple formats ( format c:) and even that does not guarantee privacy if the government seizes your computer.

I am an MIS Manager and System Administrator, and this program will do a darn fine job of wiping out your HD. Enough so, that the " National Nuclear Security Administration" uses it, as part of their tool set.

Have a look here, and be careful with it!

i use cyberscrub (www.cyberscrub.com) since windows is cool and doesn't actually delete a file until it gets overwritten with a file with the exact same name, cyberscrub overwrites those files and then deletes them (it does it in more fancier ways than i can explain). You can choose between different levels of security, i always use the Guttman overwrite which makes it virtually impossible for a program to recover deleted files and also renders magnetic reader devices (if they REALLY want to get you) useless. The only down side is it takes 12 or 15 hours (and i only have a 12GB HDD!) But anywho, its free to use for 14 days and it works well.
