Hi all,
A friend of mine swears that if you taking ibuprofen w/ hydro makes it more effective in pain management; also it makes the hydro last longer and you don't have to take as much. Thus not damaging your liver with all the APAP or having to take Tylenol with the hydro.
Does anyone know anything about this?
thanks

A lab study shows that NSAIDS like ibuprofen or Aleve potentiate analgesia. And anecdotal reports are everywhere, so I can't disagree with you there! It WILL, however, have effects on your body. Every NSAID hurts your stomach and kidneys (taking too much ibuprofen destroyed pro basketball player Alonzo Mourning's kidneys and he had to retire and have both dialysis and a kidney transplant). Thing like ibuprofen also thin your blood, so if you get cut, you can just watch it bleed for a while in amazement... okay, nevermind about that. NSAIDS are like any other OTC drug, good and bad points. Some people say that 10/500 hydro are much better than 10/325, that the APAP makes it better...

The biggest caution with Ibuprofen, in my experience, has been the affects it has on the stomach. Of course, a lot of that has also to do with genetics. However, I took Ibuprofen for a period of about 2 years and wound up with a gastric ulcer that doesn't seem to ever be completely healed ... had to stop taking the iburpofen and now I can't take any kind of anti-inflamatories at all. But, yes, I can believe that added with hydrocodone, Ibuprofen would help greatly in reducing certain types of pain because it's going to help reduce inflamation.

I just got a script filled for generic Ibuprofen with 7.5mg hydro. I can eat two of them at the same time with little relief. I get more out of a Tylenol #4. My generic ibuprofen with hydro are from Abbott Labs - poor meds in my opinion.

I believe Abbott made the trade drug. One would think they would make a quality generic. Guess not.

Its impossible for drugs to vary in quality, although ibuprofin needs to be coated and the coating could be different, but the other poster didnt say it hurt his stomach more, just that it didnt work well.
The myth of drug brands being different quality comes from people's experience with things like shampoos, cosmetics, foods, Etc. All of those things are a mixture of different ingredients in different ratios. thats why they can be different from each other. therefore people think everything can vary in quality. however, a drug is one single chemical and people dont understand that a molecue is a molecue and there can be no variation in quality, it either is, or it isnt, and i doubt any generic mis-synthesized the drug and put another chemical in there. there may be a slight variation in the amount of the drug in the pills from one brand to another.
