If your lucky enough to live within a days drive or less of canada, you are fortunate enough to have access to a few OTC drugs in canada (Codeine, etc..). You can purchase tylenol/asprin with codeine for a few dollars over the counter. (you have to ask for them. they keep them behind the counter)
If I was to bring these across the border, I personally would empty out an 500ct asprin bottle and dump 400 or so in and throw it in my glovebox. And don't claim them. It is the simplest, easiest way.
I don't suggest doing this. It is what I myself would do if I lived near the border which I don't. I live in south africa. So don't go breaking any laws.

Thanks for the Helpful Hints, relic22792. I live a good six or eight hours from the Canadian border, so I won't be able to put your tip to the test.
Oh yeah and W E L C O M E to the freeboard! How's the weather down there in Jo-burg?

Yes, I know what you're talking about .... it's called 222's is the brand name and the generic is A.C&C. which are the ingredients: aspirin, caffiene and codeine. They are not very strong. Maybe 4 = like a tylenol 3 but they are very handy for tapering down from hydro and they are cheap. It's not illegal to bring them across the border but there is a limit. I think it is 2 bottles per adult. I live in Seattle and have been getting them from Vancouver for over 20 years.

I have brought them over mysef many times. Susan, you are right, there is a 2 bottle limit per person. Most of my family live in the Niagra Falls area right on the border and whenever I visit I always go over the bridge and buy some just to have on hand. But, I have to admit, I always bought more than 2 bottles, I did not claim them but always had the bag right on the seat in plain view. Once, they took a look and said nothing. I think I had 4 bottles, but I did have a passenger with me so I guess they wern't worried about it. They are not very strong (8 mg. codeine per tablet) and if I take more than 2 at time it really eats at my stomach so I just quit taking them. Too much aspirin or tylenol. EMJ

I also live near Canadian border and did the drive and purchased, but I wanted the Tylenol or generic not the ones with aspirin. I was wondering what they are called. I asked for the 222's but with tylenol instead and they looked at me like I was crazy. So what are they actually called so I don't sound like a fool next time. Thanks so much!

OK, found it. It is a generic brand (Pharmasave) and it says on the bottle: ACETAMINOPHEN
Caffeine & 8 mg. Codeine
Phosphate Tablets
I remember when I bought them, all I said was the same thing you did, I just asked for the generic AC&C's (not the 222's) but with the Tylenol instead of aspirin. Make sure you go to a pharmacy near the border, they are not as picky. Hope this helps some. I would just go to another pharmacy next time. This phamacy you went to knew what you were talking about, just trying to give you a hard time probably. EMJ

Cheese, you are exactly right, they are the generic for Tylenol 1. Maybe when Pab40 said 222's they thought it was for the aspirin instead of tylenol. But, I would think the pharmacy knows, don't you? I haven't bought them in a while but I know the law still states you can bring 2 bottles (I always got the 200 count) per person. Hope this will help Pab40 the next time. Take care. EMJ

Thanks so much for the info and the information about bringing it back. My husband was very paranoid about me doing this and didn't want any problems so I didn't declare it and when the car ahead of us got searched he about had a cow... I just stuck the bottle in the glove box and we didn't get searched, but it scared him, so thanks I will relay that msg to him. I did get the bottle of 200 and really wanted 2 bottles but was afraid they wouldn't let me and didn't want to sound anymore nuts than they thought I was since this was my first trip.. Very helpful. Thanks

Hi Pab, one more little tip, (never hurts to be careful, right?), just always open one of the bottles so the seal will be broken, and then if they do search, just say you had a bad headache, went to the pharmacy and asked for the best thing they had for headaches. My relatives buy them all the time and they know what to do in case you are searched. And, I have never declared them either, I was always afraid they would take them away from me. EMJ

I've driven across the border before - Detroit/Windsor, and had generic tylenol w/8mg codiene, 50mg caffiene. The bigger deal was personally crossing, not what I carried. You'll need your drivers license, birth certificate, and if your name changed when you got married - your marriage certificate. If you have a passport - a passport alone is enough. I had more trouble getting back in, traveled with the kids and then husband, and they had us leave the car and took the kids in a different room to ask if we were their parents... thank goodness my older one wasn't mad at us that day..
From Chicago it's about a 5 hour drive (if the skyway isn't under construction).
Don't go to Wal-Mart, they ask where you're from... only sell the little 50ct bottles to you and look at you funny.
There is a drugstore all over - kind of like a big Walgreens or CVS... purfume is cheaper there too... I might suggest getting 2 bottles from each branch you happen to stop at....
There is a great Museum of Modern Art (FREE!) and fun festivals during the summer on the shore. Tunnel BBQ has awesome ribs, and the Raddison Riverfront (parking extra) has a nice pool.
It's really not a big deal, only if you make it one. You can even bring home a Havana for that cigar smoking uncle...
It's a great cheap way to take the kids to a foreign country.
The casino is kind of fun too...
If you have any questions feel free to pm... I'm only here once a week or so though so I'm not ignoring you.

I think there is a pharmacy there called "Life Pharmacy"- they make their own brand of tylenol w/ codeine if I remember correctly and they're all over the place in Toronto. The few times I have been to Canada, I always stopped there. Canada's an awesome place- I would definitely consider moving some day. You also gotta bring back Canadian candy bars- so much better than what we have here, they're like British or something.

Well, if I had been in CA this past weekend I would have seen that the pharmacy is Shoppers Drug Mart... and they have big orange signs. Life is the brand for their store... their generic, Life deodorant, Life toothpaste, Life aceto w/c & c...
OHHHHH candy bars!! I do NOT have a stockpile of "smarties" - big yummy bars of white chocolate with little tiny m&m's in them... hang on I gotta quick check under my bed for a sec... oh yeah... I'm going to start looking like that elephant if I keep sneaking under my bed!
I guess a few things have changed since I was there last... the Windsor Art Gallery is now charging a $2 admission - CA not USD - exchange rate very recently was about $1.35 USD to $1.00 CDN. So only about a buck and a half US.
The big casino was closed for the past few months - on strike, just opened last Tues... what timing!! Anyway... they are enjoying one tourists money.
There is a pharmacy that is not a chain, a few mins from the tunnel, the gal there is a doll, friendly & sweet. One thing she told me that I did NOT know is this -
People from the US can use Canada's health care - not just for a broken leg while traveling - but for other things too. I know about the seniors and low drug costs, but she said that you can go to a walk in, some of the shoppers have them or this pharm is connected to one, and the dr will rx for you for one full year - you can buy the drugs then or they will send them every 3 months, the dr visit costs - get this - about 30 US dollars.
Well, I have no insurance, and one kid needs a sports physical form filled n signed. The local doc price is $185 for that exam. Get real! It will be cheaper for me to take the kid to CA and have it done there, including gas and food AND a night in a hotel.
If you want the name, add, ph, directions for that gal and her place let me know - I wouldn't mind throwing her some more business from the US, she said a ton of their income is from US citizens, and she was happy to offer cheaper care.
Anyway - think I've rambled enough for one day!
And one more thing... I think in my earlier post I said 50mg of caffeine - it is only 15. Coke has 45 per serving and Mt. Dew has 55.

DOH! I just can't shut up today!
I hear the price for a 200 count bottle of generic brand acet w/c & c is $11.99 at one place and $12.99 at another... So... that means today as of noon it would be $8.62 USD at one place and $9.34 USD at the other.

I just got back from Barbados about 2 months ago and they were selling 8mg codiene phosphate, 200 count for $1.25 a box. I bought 10 boxes I declared them too. Put them in my suitcase, and I got them home fine. I also bought cigettes (a carton of Marb Lights only $7.99) and 2 liters of Captain Morgans (only. $7.00 each) Can you believe those prices? If you like beer, when in Canada get Molson XXX, you can get it at any duty free shop. I think it's 11% al per volume. All I know is 2 beers will get you a buzz that a 6 pack usually does. Canada pwnz0r0z.

Don't the packs of cigarettes have 25 in them instead of 20? When I went to Banff (AWESOME PLACE), the packs were really wide. I'm with yawkaw...I would definitely consider moving up there. Alberta was just beautiful.

Except that Canadian Mountain Dew has no caffeine. Apparently, it is illegal in Canada to add caffeine to non-cola sodas.

I haven't bought them in a while but I know the law still states you can bring 2 bottles (I always got the 200 count) per person.
Cite? Without a prescription (and why would you have one, since they're OTC in Canada?), you're limited to 50 tablets. From the horse's mouth:
A new bill was recently passed by Congress that amends a portion of the Controlled Substances Act (21USC956(a)). This amendment allows a United States resident to import up to 50 dosage units of a controlled medication without a valid prescription at an international land border. These medications must be declared upon arrival, be for your own personal use and in their original container.
(source: Customs' website)
Hence a previous poster's statement about Wal-Mart selling no more than 50 tablets to U.S. residents.
I was severly hassled by U.S. Customs and had my car searched for bringing back one bottle containing 100 tablets. I offered to dump out 50, but they let me keep all 100 with a warning to keep it under 50 in the future. (I got the impression that they really don't want people bringing back the stuff in any amount, legal or not.)

I've crossed at Detroit/Windsor many times, and have never had a problem getting into Windsor. They've always asked for some sort of ID (even before 9/11), and while it's true that legally speaking, you need: 1) a passport; or 2) photo ID plus proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate), they often just ask for photo ID.
Still, you want to have all necessary papers in order, just in case. Also, ask your auto insurance agent for a yellow Canadian insurance ID card, which verifies that your insurance is valid in Canada and meets all of their requirements. Canadian Customs has never asked me for it, but you'll want to have it if you get into an auto accident.
Other than wanting ID, Canadian Customs has always been nice and has never hassled me in any manner. I guess they want me to spend my American dollars there.
Getting back into Detroit is sometimes easier and sometimes harder. Even after 9/11, I've sometimes been let in without a request for any ID whatsoever. Other times, I've been singled out for a search. Sometimes they're friendly, sometimes they're rude, and sometimes they're merely polite.
BTW, for those of you unfamiliar with the Detroit/Windsor tunnel, the US end is located in downtown Detroit. I was amazed when, after 9/11, they pulled me aside and had several Customs officers interrogate me about importing Tylenol #1 (which is OTC in Canada). A terrorist could have crossed the border and brought something like a "dirty bomb" right into the middle of downtown Detroit because Customs was too busy hassling harmless me.

In Toronto, across from the Woodbine horse track, there is a really cool, HUGE department store with a pharmacy, a tobacco shop with a great big humidor FILLED with different Cubanos (no American, only foreign cigarretes), groceries, liquor, general merchandise, everything!! One of the best stores I've ever been to and everything was cheap, cheap, cheap by our US standards. If I could only remember the name.

I cross at WA state, and after 9/11 I was questioned intensely about guns. I am a woman, and really don't care about guns, and they kept saying "are you sure you don't have any guns?" I just said check anywhere you want. This was heading into Canada.
I also buy the mersyndol without caffeine(when those use to work for me)and I have never declared them. Never had a problem either.
