Maybe one of the reasons is that years ago in the good old days , doctors would and could actually prescribe inexpensive and proven narcotics for pain, stress and a load of other medical problems. Now doctors (and I am NOT picking on you beleive it or not) are to concerned with CYA and write drugs that they knwo will not work as well but they are the newer, more expensive ones that are supposed to have less addictive side effects but still be as effective. One drug comes to mind is Imitrex. I started taking it in the late 90's because some doctors would only prescribe this $3.00 a pill drug ( that is what it cost where I live I think-but I do know it was very expensive and still is) instead of cheap, effective pain releivers like hydro which cost about 25 cents a bill or less.
Thee are other reasons like a big jump in some salaries ( I won't mention any by name because I don't want to start a flame war ). All the new fancy equipemtn contributes to the increased cost and of course supply and demand may be the biggest factor.
Just a few thoughts.

I find it ridiculous that proper healthcare is very near unattainalbe for average person in this country and is so for many reasons.
Here is my latest experience.
I had several procedures done all in one surgery in 7/04 due to severe pain. The issue was resolved but ever since this surgery I was experiencing a whole new constant sharp pain in abdomen. During this time I relocated to a city far away. Knowing no one at the time I was lucky enough to fall into the hands of some very good DR's that went every route to get to the source of the matter. I ended up with a very good surgeon who went in and removed a medical instrument that was left behind from the 7/04 procedures. Now I am 99 percent pain free.
Here is my dilema. Everyone I know is screamin "SUE HIM" My stand point is that I am sure this dr did not do this on purpose, with healthcare issues where they are today due to people abusing the system I hate to contribute to this huge problem. In the state I was located in for first surgery 80 percent of the type of dr I had have quit in the last ten years due to unaffordable malpractice insurance.
What do I do? I am unsure. I mean I was in horrible pain for the better part of three months. I think maybe I would be okay with ust having all resulting medical bills paid. I would love to hear from some of the great minds here on this board.

I myself am holding off on surgery because I can't afford it. Even though my ins would pay for it, I can't afford to miss that much work.

I'm only going to say this............how will this person be held accountable for this mistake if you do nothing? This is supposed to be a highly skilled professional and to think that this happened is unbeleivable. To save the next person from this negligence would motivate me into action.
I'm sorry this happened to you.

You are right, of course, but to what extent do I pursue it?

Actually, the real reason that health care is so expensive is because of sue-happy patients and sleaze-bag lawyers combined with an unrealistic tort system and greedy insurance companies.
My own doctor had a combined practice with another doctor and they had to close down and get a job with a professional clinic. The reason, skyrocketing malpractice insurance premiums, due to all the lawsuits, combined with medical insurance companies paying less and less all the time.
If you're curious, ask your PCP about malpractice rates, but be prepared for a rant.

daddyj, you are right. I know that there are several reasons, but in my opinion you nailed the main one!

You are indeed correct but where does that leave the person with a legitimate issue that should never be swept under the rug? You can't ignore the fact that someone was negligent!?
