I'm fortunate enough to have a PM doc prescribing for me, but I often wonder what the future holds for those who rely soley on OP's for their narcotic medications. Since not much seems to be going on on the boards lately, I pose this hypothetical question.
What would you do if OP's suddenly became extinct or illegal? And do you spend any time thinking about this or worrying about this?
Any takers?

I'll deal with it when it happens. I'm too busy right now worrying about other things.

I would worry.
I have a husband/wife team for my docs.
She listens, he does not. Her side of the waiting room is SRO. She is witty, smart, and listens. To see her takes weeks.
He, is still operating under the misconception of doctor=god.
I have asked for my medical records this week, and x-ray reports to be mailed to me, and he has said, "not until she tells me why she needs them, and only then, and she must come in to see me."
(Also known as a co-pay and a billable office visit).
I worry.

Just so you know you have a legal right to your medical records, you can be charged a fee for coping but you can not be charged for an office visit. I would suggest you go down there, sign the hippa release, and demand a copy of your records (it is your legal right and you do not have to explain why, if you feel the need to just say you would like a copy for your home records). They may delay you for a couple weeks but you WILL get them!
And in response to Imsuscot1 everyone who depends on OPs for their narcotic medications should be proactive and have a back up plan, trust me you will not wake up and just deal with it if you have built a tolerance and never mind the very reason you take them in the first place.......that pain will be back to haunt you like a viper.......Heed her words, figure out what you would do now not when it happens!

Thanks Tray...some seem to think I meant this as a personal affront...and nothing could be further from the truth..but to each their own. Just curious was all.

IMSUSCOT1,
I think it's a good question. Before I found out I could order pain medications online, I felt "blessed" when my PCP would prescribe #20 Lortab 5's every 5-6 months for my DDD of the spine, (bulging cervical discs, osteophytes, spondylosis) ,revealed plain as day on a MRI. Constant neck and right arm pain that, fortunately, only really started 1 year ago. He did give me Ultram in between.
In answer to your question, I guess I would have to consider surgery. I am a nurse (aren't you one also?) and I dread the thought of surgery. I would make a terrible patient! But I guess that would be one option. I have seen one neurosurgeon then he retired 2 months ago. And if I did get up enough nerve to have surgery, I would have to take off work for many weeks...that's scary too.
Any thoughts? soulchik

I might reconsider my country of residence. Relocate to a country with less stringent regulations with regards to the medication I need to use. Sounds like a desperate measure, perhaps, but I'm single, with not alot to tie me down, and I'm a travel buff, so all in all it wouldn't feel like such a desperate measure. Perhaps a blessing in disguise. I'm becoming disillusioned with North American culture as it is.

As far as I'm concerned, OPs have ALREADY gone away. I've not had very much success at all ... got into the game too late I guess. The halcyon days are apparently over. The constant headaches from dealing with OPs and IOPs, the fear of legal ramifications, the constantly rising costs (I'm not a wealthy person by a LONG shot), and the escalating crack-downs on OPs are too much for me.
I've decided to settle for the minimal PKs my doc prescribes and just deal with my CP the rest of the time, like I have for years. I'm looking into accupuncture and yoga. I've started painting. I've decided to learn a new musical instrument (I'm a guitarist).
And, if things get HORRIBLE, there's always the ER. That's the way I used to deal with it. The debt is no fun, but there it is.
I'm outta here. Good luck to everybody and may your pain lessen with time.

I have a friend from Romania. He told me in Romania, any RX drug is available over the counter if you can afford it.
Problem is counters are often bare.

I'd have to go see my local doc monthly instead of 3 times a year. He's not on my new insurance (a lousy expensive HMO)which is why I started OP's but he will rx for anything I want.
My biggest problem will be what to do when he retires.
This happened once before, so I guess having my records (meds I was already taking) might have made it simpler.
Next time I see him I'll try and remember to ask what his future plans are.

Either go to Canada and get some crappy over-the-counter stuff or go without and be in pain like before. I heard in Canada you can see a doctor there and get weakened generic type percocet, and you can bring a designated amount back over the border??'m not sure of that number. Just heresay from friends that have done this.

This is why I URGE everyone resting on their OP laurels to continue looking for a compassionate doctor. Of course you never know when they may not be there anymore as well, but it always helps to make hay while the sun shines (to coin a phrase ) Like I said in an earlier post: after four years and talking to a lot of people, I finally found one.
My bet is 2 years max lifeline for online, records based medicine...but not before a lot of intensified chaos, sky high prices, and shortages.

I'd probably reopen my Worker's Comp case, go to my OWN doctors this time and sue the pants off of my former company for not holding my job for me for the allotted 6 months under the Family Medical Leave act...in fact, I may just do that, anyway...
