Fake eBay email
      #136500 - 02/12/04 02:19 PM

The only reason I am posting this message is because I NEARLY fell for it.

I sell many things on eBay and today received an email that was a form that stated that either or I or someone else tried unsuccessfully to log into my eBay account using the wrong password 3 times and that I needed to verify my account information.

I know it seems obvious, but this one was WELL DONE (same font and language used by eBay) including links to eBay within the footer of the email. The "sender" showed up as (which is an actual eBay email address sent to sellers after an auction closes.) But as anyone knows, you can put anything you want to in the "from" line of your email account. It was actually the sender's "name" of that tipped me off that it was a scam--as eBay uses separate email addresses for different things. (Besides the fact that eBay and others never solicit personal information by email.)

The final reason why I almost fell for it was the fact that my credit card expires this month and I tried yesterday to update my info, but their server had issues.

Anyway, this email is the best one I have ever seen of scammers trying to get your personal info. I just thought to warn everyone.

By the way, when I decided it was a hoax, I filled out their form with a nice "XXXX YOU VERY MUCH!"

Do not click or even attempt to open the fake eBay emails. Your account can really get screwed up. Forward the email to and they'll reply rather quickly to let you know if the email was from them or not. I've received several. The weird thing is how do these scammers even get your email?!

You can get any eBay user's email address if you are a registered eBay user. All you have to do is click on their user ID and sign in with your own eBay account info.

EBay is probably the biggest reason I get spam email.

I also buy/sell on ebay & got something last week that said to verify my account or they would suspend me. I ignored it. I have been at ebay since 1999. I never have gotten any stuff like that it just seems like its been happening in the past couple months as that was like the 3rd one I had gotten.
The scary thing like you said is it looks in fact like it came from ebay. I forwarded one of them I had gotten to ebay & got an email back saying in fact it wasnt from them, so forward them on so they can track & catch them.
Good thing you didnt log in & fall for the scam
night_ shade, who knows what would have happened.

I buy and sell on ebay also.. lots... I get one of these bad boys at least once a week. There is a quick way to tell if this is real or not. Not that they ever are. In whatever program you use to get your email click view source or headers. Usually in the headers there will be line right along with the from awconfirm yada yada... misconfigured sender line. Now yes you can send all this to But I have recently tracked one of these nasties as originating in austraila at least that is where the domain they used is based. There has been a pickup in my "ebay emails" recently. I don't think that ebay is gonna be doing a whole lot about them so just be careful and never give personal info on them

On every single fruad email I have gotten, when I place my mouse arrow over the link, the address is my status bar is different from what is listed.

I used to go to the form and fill it out using false info including some very clever names. Ahh, whadda going to do?

Yep, ebay & AOL are spam engines, once you stop using them & clean up your system things start to get better.

Actually, when I sent the "form" by clicking on the link in the email (it wasn't filled in with my info, just some swear words! ) it went to eBay's site...HOWEVER...I purposely watched for a hidden redirector, and it was there. I can't recall what the site to redirect was, but it never actually "stopped" on the site--just went right to eBay.

So, whoever is in on this scam has done their homework! Like I said, this one was GOOD...an average computer user who fell for it would never have known they had been redirected to eBay from someone else's site.

Something else I noticed was that if you clicked on a link within the email, many times it would actually take you to Ebay's site but if you submitted the actual form, it would take you somewhere else.

Like you said, very smart whoever did this. I wonder what they think when they get an email from I P Freely?

Here's a new attempt to convince me that eBay has suspended my account (it's far from the truth and I just HAD to laugh at this one....note all the spelling errors...)

Text from bogus eBay email:

We regret to inform you that your eBay account could be suspended if you don't resolve your problems. To resolve this problems {note improper grammar} please download this attachament and login to your account in order to resolve your account problems. If your problems could not be resolved {incorrect grammar again} your account will be suspended for a period of 3-4 days, after that it will be
again operational.
{Just a LITTLE redundant with the word "problems" ???...DUHHHHHH...}
Per the User Agreement, Section 9, we may immediately issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend or terminate your membership and refuse to provide our services to you if we believe that
your actions may cause financial loss or legal liability for you, our users or us. We may also take these actions if we are unable to verify or authenticate any information you provide to us.
Due to the suspension of this account,
{note that above it says only that they MAY suspend my account} please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way. This includes the regist ering of a new account.
Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to eBay.
Regards,
Safeharbor Department
eBay, Inc.

(followed by the eBay-like login page and the words: "You can also register or sign in using the following service"...

The same goes for PayPal - they've also got a "spoof" email address to forward questionable emails to.

Night Shade - I wanted to let you know that actually you can't get eBay member's email address, even if you're an eBay member, unless you're involved in a transaction with them. Otherwise, they have a form you can fill out to contact the member, with eBay being the go-between...

Looks like someone used one of Yahoo's Email servers to send this. The yahoo ip shows it came from Yahoo directly, and in the received from line it says HELO, that is a command you issue to a server on its email port to get it to acknowledge you(not through a website, this is done using telnet). The IP 80.96.95.2 is where the email was sent from, this could also be spoofed but most likely that is it. I tried looking it up and i didnt get anything. You can't really do much with this but oh well.
