Fedx Opened My Package.
      #143401 - 03/01/04 08:39 PM

I recently recieved a package from fedex. When the driver came to the door and I handed him a check for C.O.D. he looked at it and said"yeah we were right about the price,we had to open the pack because we couldnt see the $amount" I said "no problem" I looked on the Pack and one # in the price was covered but I know they've been wanting to look and see what they've been deliverin. This was also the 1st delivery with the actual name of the OP on the package.I really dont think looking in the Package helped them find out the price of the COD but I am glad they found a LEGAL prescription and instructions for administration AND the phone # of the Pharmacy.Nosey

Was it obvious that the package had been opened ? Must have been, since the envelopes are sealed and can't be peeled open and resealed without it being obvious. But maybe they did need to see the receipt inside, since the label on the outside doesn't list the price, or does it? I don't know, I've never ordered COD. Glad you got your medication intact !

Yes it was obvious they had opened it but I wouldnt have noticed it if the driver hadnt TOLD ME they opened it and there was no $ reciept on the inside. All they had to do to maintain my privacy was look it up on their computer. No, they wanted to look inside. You would think they would be happy about the major amount of buisness they get from OP's, more $ = more raises for them!

WOW!! That is just wrong! They had NO RIGHT to open your package. I would definately be making some phone calls and writing letters of complaint. IF they needed to get the reciept from inside the package YOU should have been the one to open it to produce the documentation. They could have checked their own computers or called the sender to ask for the COD amount. They invaded your privacy which is DIRECTLY against their own policies. I would definately follow up on this. What if it was something deeply personal in that package (I know, of course your meds are personal but you know what I mean)?? That is not right at all.

Leave it alone -- don't do anything -- don't complain -- take it easy. They did deliver the medication intact. And chances are they will continue to deliver to you. So best thing is to do nothing, and just be polite and thankful to your Fedex driver.

Thankful for what?? For breaking company policy? For invading his privacy? I'm sorry but I think that's ridicuclous! He was getting a legally prescriped medication in that package - it wasn't cocaine! He has no reason to be "quiet or thankful!"

Nah, go the emotional route. Tell the driver how much you appreciate his looking out after you. That in your condition you have a hard time keeping things straight and that people like him are the greatest of gifts. Pile it on deep and syrupy. You will get those "deliver by 7:00 pm" packages in the am and he may even start leaving them for you with out a sig.

You can always raise hell later.

I do believe it's a federal offense to open mail belonging to someone other than the person to whom it is addressed. It doesn't matter the reason. I find it hard to believe there were not other ways to check the COD amount of this package. That should have been something known before pulling in the driveway.

Like it was said earlier, what if it had been a personal item such as a sexual aid kit, an HIV test kit, an eviction notice, a garnishment, divorce papaers, any number of things that are totally personal. What if that driver had this happen to him? How would it feel to have his privacy invaded?

Give him credit for coming up with a good excuse to do something illegal but XXXXX out that credit for being so stupid as to invade your personal space.

Keep us posted on the outcome of this one. I'd be interested to know.

Having worked for UPS for years in a department that handles just this type of thing. If the address tag is gone or unreadable we opened it looking for an invoice or a cod slip with a price, correct address etc.I can tell you I have opened many many packages in my time. When you are dealing on such a tight schedule with shipping times, There isn't always time or even access to computers to go and look up hundreds of packages that come through with mistakes on each shift. Opening is usually the quickest and most efficient way as 95% of the time there is an invoice. I have seen many very personal things but the main objective was to get the package to the customer asap. Not to be nosey. These companies want you to get your goods with as little hassle as possible. It's either get your package to you or send it back to the shipper and let them handle it. Parcels shipped thru UPS or Fedex is not considered mail. I'm not sure about Fedex, maybe they have a different policy than UPS. Personally,I would rather have them do whatever they had to do to get my package to me on time without any mix ups on COD price, wrong address, etc.

Excellent point. It would appear tht they said something up front and for a valid reason. I mean, they know what it is anyway so what's the difference? I doubt they opened it just to be nosey. It's not worth a great paying job to do something against company policy.

And since this is NOT the post office, I do not believe that this would violate any mail privacy issues. At my fed-ex office they have a sign posted that says they have the right to open any package they want. Just remember that.

As long as all the meds were there, then let it go.. FedEx drivers work very hard and I am in total support with whatever they do to get my package on time.

I don't think they really care, unless they have different motives in mind, but remember there are always bad apples in every bunch.

...yea well you are lucky to have a FedEx driver who at least is not an idiot.....My driver seems to take it upon himself to deliver the package that is suppose to be at my house and he takes it to where my Wife works, this guy feels that taking it there is easier for him.....on top of it all he will walk in and tell her this in front of all her coworkers........"Here are more of your husband drugs"....Now really is this any of there bussiness and does he have the right to take the package to another address..????

Dego,
He isnt legally supposed to deliver the package to another address, especially if it is meds, I as told by a CS rep that it has to go to the address on the label. My Fed Ex driver is great, he goes out of his way to deliver things to me and i have his cell phone number. There have been times when i wasnt going to be at work ( where i have all my packages delivered) and i called him to ask him to drop it off at home, or i have driven around ( small town) until i found him and he just gets it for me. I know that i could get him in trouble for that, but he does it as a favor, so i would never say anything to CS about what he does for me. I do offer him cold drinks in the hot summer and gave him cookies for Christmas, so he continues to look out for me. It could be that your driver thinks he is doing a good thing and he has no clue that it is comprimising for you when he makes statements like that to your wife. If it is meds for blood pressure or heat condition, why would it matter? JMO

Hi, just let the person know next time that you know he/she is looking out for you but your are ill and you need to open your own package. If it makes you feel better, I get my refills from my insurance company shipped from a pharmacy in PA, they MAKE my doc give me three refills of Kolipin, and a couple other meds, that is a lot of little packages that the mailman has to put in my box, they are not discreetly packaged either...so it's the same darn thing...except it comes USPS...what is Pres Bush going to do about that!...go through all insurance companies too...creep... So don't worry. Seems to me that you can tell what they are anyway...maybe there was a skunk on the loose and they wanted to see if they could lift some...it happens...people do steal..So be glad they are all acounted for...C.O.D. is the best way to get your meds, you can always refuse them if they look opened....JMHO...Boo

Well the problem here is that THEY are the ones who covered the original label that said the COD price. They tried to deliver it a day early (fri.) and when we werent home they redilivered it the next buisness day (Mon.)with a new label stuck over the old one covering the COD $. They had the whole weekend to figure out the $. Booo on them :thumb-down:

Fedex wouldn't be federal,I believe federal would only cover government institutions such as the USPS.I was always under the impression that Fedex IS legally covered to open anything that is in their possession for different reasons. All they would haveto say is checking for dangerous substances etc.. I remember a few years back may be 5 yrs. ago when we could actually get Fedex overnight delivery from Pharmagroup I think in Spain? and Fedex opened a couple of my pkgs. and then not long after Pharmagroup had to quit delivering that way all together.God,those were the days!!!!

Maybe one of our lawyers can tell you if you have a legitimate reason to sue. I would think it is an invasion of privacy and have to believe that there is some sort of protocol where they would contact the company well before they would ever open your package.

The 4th Amendment only covers actions by government agents. FedEx is private, not government. FedEx and all private carriers can open up any package they want. They don't need a reason and they certainly don't need a search warrant as is usually the case with USPS.

If FedEx finds what they believe are illegal drugs they can call the police and hand it over to them to make a legal bust. Read the standard terms on their shipper. When you hand a package over to them you are authorizing them to inspect it.

If you want more privacy, use USPS Priority Mail or Express Mail. Unless the package is undeliverable or leaking or something like that, they need a search warrant based on probable cause to open a mailed package.

If you go to FedEx in the Phillipines or Mexico to send off a package, they routinely open it up right at the counter to see what's inside before accepting it.

the reality is, most fed ex, ups drivers, or mail carriers could care less what is in your package. with alot of them you could have crack vials and they wouldnt care. again, there is an exception to every rule, but the bottom line is that there is no need for you to be scared or paranoid because you followed the rules and what you did was totally legal, at least for now.

How terrible, I would watch out for them next time you have a delivery coming. You never know what they can do. I am sure most of them could care less but there are always the ones who are curious.
