This is a weird question, but do doctors always have to put their DEA number on scripts when writing for narcotics? I have noticed that at several clinics I have worked at with multiple docs (there were 12 residents and 4 "real" MD's who were supervising them) and they could just check off thier name. There was one DEA # printed on the script. Wouldn't the pharmacy need to call every time to see who was what? I have also gotten scripts with no DEA number. Whats the deal on that?

Not sure if this varies by state or what...in Texas & Arizona, the only DEA's are required on schedule II's.

I live in Texas also and two doctors that I currently see as well as those in the past DO put their DEA number on all presecriptions. i know for a fact that they do with class 3 drugs like hydrocodone. The number is in the prescription letterhead usually.
Is this not a great country or what.

Well some have the numbers printed on the letterheads, but I would think this would lead to temptation to patients to forge. I just got a hydro script for like 90 and no DEA # and the pharmacy didn't say anything, or call the doc.

My doctor writes for my methadone and has NEVER put his DEA # on the prescription. However, in MN all controlled drugs get verified by the pharmacy--so their signs say, anyway,(although they can fill them prior to verifications.)
But I always use the same pharmacy. May be just a quirky thing he does.

When I filled my methadone today (again written without a DEA # on the script) I asked the pharmacist about this.
The response was that my doctor practices medicine less than 5 miles from the pharmacy I use (Target) and is a known doctor in the area. He said that if I tried to fill the prescription 20 miles away, and if that doctor was not already in their system, they probably wouldn't accept the prescription without the DEA# on it.
Just another perspective to this interesting issue.

I live in Louisiana, and have gone to four different doctors for treatment, second opinions, etc. All of my prescription, even for celebrexx and ultram, nonscheduled meds, have had a DEA# on them.

In my state it's neccessary for all controlled substances, if the doctor forgets to write it, the pharmacy will call the doctor.

Don't know about legalities, but I use a group practice, who share the same Rx pads and it has the DEA# and CA Lic# for each doc printed on the pads they use for everything.

Same thing in two states I've lived in-all controlled substances must have number on script which is why all prescriptions I get now come pre printed with the number(s already on them. I suppose there are exceptions butit seems to be a rarer thing now.

Hey Quincy,
this is your favorite pal in pain !!
I went to this pain management doctor who "informed" me that he only prescribes methadone or hydrocodone because they don't require the DEA # in Texas... He was rather rude and said that he streamlined his practice to avoid any DEA hassles...so much for compassion for the patient, huh?
I knew that methadone wasn't a triple script, but he said that while hydrocodone doesn't require the triple script, that Percocet does require the DEA #. Except for dosage, they work the same for me, until now I didn't know there were different prescribing requirements.
I'll be in touch...
