DEA Number on prescriptions

This is a weird question, but do doctors always have to put their DEA number on scripts when writing for narcotics? I have noticed that at several clinics I have worked at with multiple docs (there were 12 residents and 4 "real" MD's who were supervising them) and they could just check off thier name. There was one DEA # printed on the script. Wouldn't the pharmacy need to call every time to see who was what? I have also gotten scripts with no DEA number. Whats the deal on that?
