I guess my experience probably proves the theory correct. As a guy, but a younger guy, I haven't had any trouble getting pain meds from doctors. From my dentist after surgery, I was given Vicodin with one refill, and then told to call him if I need more. But, part of my success I'd like to think is due to my acting. I am a biology student, and kind of on the tall/thin side, so I put on my glasses and a polo and look like a total wuss, playing up the dorky science student part of me, and act really concerned about getting addicted, saying I've heard all these bad things about Vicodin, but I really need something for the pain. Of course, they LOVE that I'm a science student. One doctor gave me a discount because I reminded him of himself at my age. They usually just reassure me that if I take my medications as prescribed, I will not be addicted.
I also add that I kind of hate taking painkillers but that I have to, because they make me itchy and want to throw up. The doctors always laugh and say, "That's normal. Now run along with your Rx's."
Maybe if I was a female high-strung dorky science student, it wouldn't be the same. But I like to think my act is more convincing than my sex. I decrease the macho when with doctors, rather than increase it.
