Re: Statewise control of Schedule II drugs

Here in Ohio I had script for Percocet filled twice, both by an urgent care doc I see. Script printed on laser jet, not sure if they have a max qty. stipulation, but my late grand-mother used to get Oxy-Contin in pretty large sized bottles but I never paid attention to the actual count when I would pick them up for her. Must have Doc's original sig, no call-ins or refills (this seems typical I beleive this holds true for all states?), no triplicates required here, and neither time did the pharmacist phone in to verify. NO ID, nor phone verification of any kind by pharmacist and it was a weekend both times.

Never had my PCP write a script for Percocet, I told her I was scripted it and it worked I called it Oxycodone to her, and she said "I can't give you that; thats stronger than Percocet!", She must have thought I said Oxycontin. Either that or its tie to get out the ole Physicians Desk Ref.. She said she can write Vicodin or Lortab and it's usually well tolerated and shouldn't cause any troubles as long as your careful. She puts refills and a reasonable quanity so at least she understood my situation as she told me she knows what it's like as she been through it herself (How many times your Dr. said that??) but I had seen her enough times befre for her to know me by then. Wish I could still see her. She was the best!!

BTW: Regarding Percocet's, I have been to two different Urgent Cares both on weekends and I was talking to Dr. he did the usual exam and what not, then said you need pain medication. "Well sir, its up to you we can middle of the road such as Lortab or Norco, or we can go higher up the ladder in strength like Percocet. At the time I didn't know brand names and what not so like anybody I just replied like anybody in pain "Whatever you think is strongest" He came back in w/ a script for 20 Percocet.

Next time a while back I went to an Urgent Care again same life ending MIGRAINE . This time I gave the Dr. the two bottles my PCP has been giving me Ultram & empty Lortab, and told him that they both worked however the Lortab seems to work better and is taken when pain gets worse. He did the same go around with me and wrote for Percocet! I asked him as I was leaving if it was the same as what I have been taking and he said well they have all sorts of names for the medication your taking but this should work just as well. I was very surprised and thinking to myself as I left, Why would he script for Percocet when I clearly told him and even showed the bottle and told him it was effective before so I was pretty much just wanting a refill to get by till my reg doc could re-fill. It certainly didn't bother me as it did knock it out, just left me wondering....why? If it was that he felt for me and thought that I needed something stronger and would be better, then thats a definite first! He didn't hurry me in anyway, his office wasn't that busy so he had the time to know practically everything.

Anyways thats my story, more info than asked for but in the days where most Dr. are scared stiff of prescribing practically ANY scheduled medication, I find these two experiences both surprising yet enlightening. My Dr. I see now thinks Darvocet is the answer to all pain. Never understood that, I would think THAT would be one of the MOST prescribed drugs in the US considering how many people I know that get that when in pain!!
Sorry for the long post, some topics I just cant answer without a story it seems!
