It is my understanding that the 40mg disks are the same as the 10mg tabs made by many companies. The disks will dissolve faster in your stomach, thus making a faster approach to the small intestines, but methadone by its nature is a long-acting narcotic. I am prescribed 80mg's of the 10mg "methadose" tabs per day but I DO NOT like to take that many. I take as little as I can to get by because it makes me groggy, gain weight, constipated, bloated, etc. But it's better than the roller coaster Hydro ride. It's just too easy to buy hydros, which aren't really meant to be used long-term for most people.

This is my first post here, but I've been reading for awhile. I've taken methadone in liquid, diskette and pill form and have been on it for eight years with my high dose at 100mgs. IMO, diskettes were less effective than liquid and liquid less effective than pills. Not by much, but the Methadose tabs (5's or 10's) seemed to "hold" longer. Oral dosing for methadone always seems to take about an hour to take effect, so some may have trouble in that regard. Honestly, liquid or diskette forms do not act any quicker than tablets. I suffered SERIOUS problems with staying awake on doses above 30mgs (forget freeway driving!!!) and gained 70 lbs over the course of 5 years (lost it all now, though on a lower dose) as a result of the severe sugar cravings. My teeth, which my dentist always commented were very nice, deteriorated over the course of my treatment to the point where I needed EIGHT root canals/crowns. My dental hygeine cannot be faulted, and my family members have great teeth. Constipation is an issue with most narcs, so I don't really feel it's worse than, say MS Contin. Some of the more serious problems with methadone is the fact that it displaces other opiates, hence, surgeries done while on a mid-to-high dose, require VERY high doses of other pain meds to keep pain controlled. While your doctor might order 1,000 mgs of Demerol for you post-surgical, nurses don't have to administer it--and many are afraid of such high doses. I suffered thru post surgery with very little pain relief due to lack of knowledge, and perhaps reticence by surgeon and nursing staff. Finally, methadone's half-life is around 1-2 days, making it a VERY difficult drug to get off of. Unless you are a terminal patient, I would never recommend methadone as an option unless there is no other choice.
