Yes they can tell the difference. I was drug tested and had morphine and hydromorphone in my system I was covered legally for the morphine but not for the hydromorphone so I lost my job due to the positive for hydromorphone. Before that I thought they only could tell it was an opiate but the proof is in the pudding I am not working there anymore.
If you are using any of the SAMSHA 5 group of drugs then most likely your UA will be flagged for a gas chromatagraph/
mass spectography type examination. At that point each individual substance you are ingesting is easily identified.I am sorry to hear you lost your job over it!
Just a little warning to you and any others reading this thread - I've had two urine tests for drug use over the last 3 years. My first - not only did I test positive for opiates, they also told me that they knew I tried to dilute my urine (I drank lots of fluids prior to the test) because of the low creatinine levels. They told me that I didn't have had to repeat the tests because they proved I had opiates in my system anyway. I found an interesting article that I highly recommended you read and pass on to everybody you know who my find themselves in this situation.

Sherman, set the way-back machine to 1970.
UA's can detect different types of opiate's,if they are in your system, I found that out first hand. once you move up the ranks, you will get tested, DEA purposes.
any other questions,feel free
I'll actually go to a real testing lab as a "walk-in", just as if I was ordered before any Pre-employment or PO appt. It costs about $50-60, but for the piece of mind - you can't beat it.
