Does anyone know of any Tramadol (Ultram) potentiators?
I have tried Benedryl, caffeine, and Phenergan, and not much has helped.
Any ideas?

Reading this post, and the answers to it caused me to add me 2 cents with a different view. Recently, I decided to go off of opiates, Percocet and Lortab, to get rid off all the side effects for a while, and to take a non-narcotic "holiday". I didn't consult my PM about this--you know how smart we all are about self-medicating ourselves----at least I thought I was. I went 24 hours without any opiates, had no withdrawal symptoms, and took 50 mg of Ultram. Within 1 hour, my husband tells me I had a "seizure". I do not remember that night, and I do not drink alcohol. Two days later I again took an Ultram, and had another "episode" which I DO remember----Shaking, unable to talk, had to be led to the bedroom where I passed out for 3 hours. I was terrified that I was having the dreaded "seizures" that can come with Ultram, and was just sick about that, because I had taken it, up to 400mgs per day off and on for a year with no problems. I went to my PM, "confessed " to trying to make the switch, and told him what happened. He was pretty unhappy with me. Told me that this was not a seizure--that I had not tapered down from the opiates before taking the Ultram, and that the 2 types of drugs taken together can create a mild to violent reaction such as I had. They are not synergestic---they do not potentiate each other, rather they fight each other, and can do harm when taken together. My PM is also a pain management Dr. and has seen this happen often. He assures me that I can go back on the Ultram, but only after he has slowly tapered me off of the opiates. Reading the replies that suggest taking these two types of drugs together gave me chills. Please discuss this with your Physician before trying this combo. He said that it may take several doses before the "seizure" like reaction occurs, but that it will occur. Please be careful---we all want to stay safe, even when we are self-medicating. Maybe some of you have done this with no problems----I'm just adding my own experience as something to consider. Good luck, and stay well

if you are looking for a potentiator of any given drug, you should look at what the metabolic pathway of that drug is and then find another drug that inhibits that pathway/enzyme. combos to potentiate a drug can be dangerious.

I use the two together all of the time with no problems.(opiates and ultram)
The only time that I had a problem was when I took
Ultram and Wellbutrin together.

Hydroxyzine (aka Vistaril or Atarax) is great for potentiating any opiate. It's available as a sedative when they don't want to give benzos, for nausea, and for allergies. Not a controlled substance, and it works great.

Caffeine works for me (if you can find a good, strong foreign coffee). Someone once said that peppermint tea works miracles on Tramadol.

I've used Ultram, Wellbutrin, and oxycodone without any problems.
I don't do it regularly, only a few times.
I can see how there might be problems though, with both Wellbutrin and Ultram having the capabilities to cause siezures.
