Reading this post, and the answers to it caused me to add me 2 cents with a different view. Recently, I decided to go off of opiates, Percocet and Lortab, to get rid off all the side effects for a while, and to take a non-narcotic "holiday". I didn't consult my PM about this--you know how smart we all are about self-medicating ourselves----at least I thought I was. I went 24 hours without any opiates, had no withdrawal symptoms, and took 50 mg of Ultram. Within 1 hour, my husband tells me I had a "seizure". I do not remember that night, and I do not drink alcohol. Two days later I again took an Ultram, and had another "episode" which I DO remember----Shaking, unable to talk, had to be led to the bedroom where I passed out for 3 hours. I was terrified that I was having the dreaded "seizures" that can come with Ultram, and was just sick about that, because I had taken it, up to 400mgs per day off and on for a year with no problems. I went to my PM, "confessed " to trying to make the switch, and told him what happened. He was pretty unhappy with me. Told me that this was not a seizure--that I had not tapered down from the opiates before taking the Ultram, and that the 2 types of drugs taken together can create a mild to violent reaction such as I had. They are not synergestic---they do not potentiate each other, rather they fight each other, and can do harm when taken together. My PM is also a pain management Dr. and has seen this happen often. He assures me that I can go back on the Ultram, but only after he has slowly tapered me off of the opiates. Reading the replies that suggest taking these two types of drugs together gave me chills. Please discuss this with your Physician before trying this combo. He said that it may take several doses before the "seizure" like reaction occurs, but that it will occur. Please be careful---we all want to stay safe, even when we are self-medicating. Maybe some of you have done this with no problems----I'm just adding my own experience as something to consider. Good luck, and stay well
