Women Offered Solutions For Sexual Dysfunction

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Ads have begun appearing on television and magazines about a little pill that can help with sexual dysfunction. But this one is not for men, it's for women.

Sexual dysfunction among women is very common and like with men, not often talked about.

"This is a real problem for a lot of women. Women of different ages will have this problem. They'll come in and say, I don't have a sex drive anymore," said Dr. Peter Sakovich.

Sakovich is a gynecologist in Irving who says that women are hesitant to talk about sexual dysfunction, but are relieved to find help. Sakovich notes that in many cases the problem lies with the level of testosterone in the body. Testosterone is the male sex hormone also present in women.

"Once we measure that (testosterone) we can see if they are lacking in the hormone and we can try to replace that," Sakovich said.

One way to replace the hormone is in the form of topical creams. Las Colinas pharmacist Jim Hrncir compounds a product his patients call the Scream Cream.

"The women are reordering, getting refills, so it is apparently working very well," Hrncir said.

Health food stores offer a variety of natural products, such as herbs that promise to boost the libido.

But, be warned, just because a product is labeled natural doesn't mean it's safe for all women.

And that brings us to a new product called Alvimil. Alvimil is an herbal product not subject to government scrutiny. The maker though has tested it in 80 women, 67 of whom say they had positive results.

The makers of the product say it can take up to three months for maximum effectivness and because it's so new, there is no way of knowing yet its impact on the larger population.

Hrncir suggests women approach it with caution. "I've just seen the prescription items work over and over. I've just not had good luck with patented, over the counter medication and I want them to work because it would be easy and it would be wonderful. But I just haven't found anything that I can truly say this is the answer."

But women are still looking for answers, and they hope someday to have the same easy success that men have had with Viagra.

Holy batfarts, Robin! Somebody's finally paying attention to the women's side of things. It's about time, although I think it's inaccurate to of the article to claim that FSD is as common as MSD. I'm pretty sure if you compare bang for bang (couldn't think of a better euphemism, sorry), the boys are getting all the laughs.

I'd like to say that I tried viagra and I thought I was going to die. I don't think my CNS liked it AT ALL.

Yohimbine is something I've found darn useful, can be prescribed for guaranteed uniformity or bought at a health food store for a higher price and a few extra mix ins.

Dong Quai is another I've tried but had a no effect on it's own. I fell asleep.

That's the news from this end of the FSD neighborhood.

Coming next: My once lusty and still luscious girlfriend started Zoloft a couple of weeks ago, and we may soon need to repeat the survey of sex-drive drugs on her. Stay tuned.

Yeah, that's one of the worst side effects of anti depressants in my opinion. Wellbutrin is the only AD that doesn't cause sexual side effects. I told my doctor I would become MORE depressed if the AD he was prescribing for me caused sexual side effects! My husband just won't tolerate that

I think it's far past time that the issues of FSD got some serious attention. During the 60s and 70s guys (well, least on TV) were always on a quest for Spanish Fly or some other 'aphrodasiac' (sp?) to get girls interested. Then the late 80s and the 90s came arround and all the news was about guys' problems. As a married guy who has been with the same heavensent babe since 1989, I think I can speak for my peers who will agree that anything that gets the wife in 'that' mood is a Very Good Thing® (indeed!). Not to sound sexist (well... what can I say, I do have a streak of that in me) but with this particular topic more IS better, from my standpoint...

NS88 - NOT undersexed, but what's "too much?" That's a problem I could live with............

Does anyone know where to obtain testosterone cream online? I've looked all over but can't find a source. Looking for 1-3%, prescription, not herbal.

I was prescribed testostrone cream after talking to my doc of my lack of sex drive after years of being a complete "horn dog ". And I have to say it is a miracle drug and not spendy at all. I have had no bad side effects from it either. I HIGHLY recommend any woman who loses her sex drive to talk to her doc about this. They can do a simple blood test to check your testosterone level, yes girls we do have it , and go from there to make sure that is what the problem is. Now if I could only find a new man

I know this is a stupid question as I type it but I can't stop wondering---where does one apply this "cream?"
D'oh, I don't mean in your house or in your car, either!
Is this like an under the nose or back of the neck thing or is really topically topical? I miss my drive...it drove off without me years ago!

It has to be compounded by your pharmacist. It is testosterone. Just ask your doc about it. It is a prescription medication and comes in different doses according to your testosterone level. Also you can rub it on the inside of your wrist or in your groin area. Trust me..This stuff is like gold. Also the only stupid question is the one not asked
Good Luck

Thanks. I have found two sources online but have decided to go the local route after all. This way my insurance will cover it in full.

Prettyday, mine and yours musta left together on a road trip...cuz' mine ain't back yet!!
I started having this problem about 2 yrs ago...but really noticable 1 yr ago. Hubby and I went to the dr, he says my rheumatoid arthritis put me in early menopause. (i'm 33!!) I've been on HRT for 9 months now...not much of a difference in the 'drive' department at all. I have been wondering about the testosterone cream for quite sometime.
I have a good friend that had a saliva test done and uses natural sublingual hormones and a creme, she says it's a miracle. (I have that pharmacy name somewhere that does the testing...I'll see if I can find it)
I would love to be off the HRT, have been so worried about the side effects, but my doctor doesn't want me to stop cold turkey. I want to switch to the natural ones and the creme...but wouldn't me being on the HRT throw my test results off for the sublingual ones?
**Sigh*** being a woman isn't easy, is it?? ** LOL

Jewel...I wonder if I can be on the testosterone creme and the HRT at the same time?? I read somewhere about the estrogen pills "turn into testosterone in the womans body"?? But, obviously, I'm not getting enough of something. **Pun intended there**

I had to be on xanax for a few months when my nephew died, and it almost coincides with my 'driven away drive'!!!
I have heard that stress can do it.

Maybe someday everyone in the medical community will do something about this oh, so common problem!!!

Not to be totally rude, but female sexual disfunction is caused by my fibro. I have the desire, but how can I do it if I can barely move? My back is sore, so I can't stand weight on it for long, I have TMD so I can't do other certain activities... and my I can't bend over without getting a huge stabbing pain down my back!! LOL Im only 25, Im supposed to be in my prime for Gods sake! Besides, I can't stay awake past 9pm, and my man won't come to bed that early. And did any of you find that taking opiates kinda dulls the sex drive a bit? My hormone levels are fine, but if I medicate myself beforehand (so I can move and groove without throwing my back out) the "satisfaction" takes a long time, or is smaller than usual. Do you know what I mean? I hope this dosen't offend anyone, but its a problem, and I think others with mobility problems could relate.

Quincy

You can, as I do, as long as you take the blood test to check your testosterone level, take HRT and the testosterone creme. I take premarin and the creme and can't imagine my life without them. I was a mess before I was diagnosed with early menopause then lost my drive. Was a drag. Anyhow, Talk to your doc about this ok?
Good Luck,

You aren't being rude at all Some positions are more difficult and painful than others. Maybe you could talk to your doc. And yea I have noticed at times that my pain meds affect my drive too. It is just a vicious circle for all of us women sometimes

Quincy, you're not being rude at all. I have to be doped to the gills in order to be able to get down. And it's hard enough finding that balance between enough pain relief to be able to be, um, active, and enough pain relief to pass out on or under your partner.

Then there's also the fact that you will have inevitably "overdone" it and cannot afford to medicate that much over the next few days to make up for it.

Interestingly, there apparently 4 different types of FSD. I don't remember where I got this from- an article in womensforum.com or ivillage. Thr differences have to do what point in the game the libido fails you. If I recall correctly, they include 1)don't want to get revved up (battery's dead) 2) can't get revved up (starter's busted) 3) having fun but getting nowhere (stuck in 2nd gear). 4) gwtting somewhere, about to run into a tree, but the tree is a mirage that keeps escaping you (the best auto analogy I can think of for this is when you car has run out of gas but there's just a little left, enough to start and roll a hundred feet and then it dies, repeat as needed)

I don't think being physically unable to have sex due to pain is technically considered FSD. I'm pretty sure FSD is the inability to have an orgasm.

FangZ, I laughed and laughed when I read your post. Thank you! You know, the last thing I want to be is demanding (uh-oh; that is the first thing a demanding woman always says..) but if you are making an effort to disconnect from your body, it's kinda hard for things to happen quickly.
