Worst expierience ever?
      #49644 - 01/12/03 10:23 PM

I was sitting here reading through everyones posts, and Ive noticed a lot of new people (less than 5 posts) popping up. So I started thinking what it was like when I was new, and then for some reason I thought about all the doctors, all the emergency room visits, etc that I have had in my life. And one always popped into my head. I had a regular doctor who was treating my back issues, and he had given 60 percocet a month for about six months. Well my company goes and changes health plans, so I join a new "very established" group, and go to my old op, gather up my records, and head over to the new place. So the nurse comes in, says the doctor will see you shortly, and leaves. No vitals, no nothing. About 1 hour later this gumpy old silver haired doctor walks in, with my recently trasferred files in his hand, and he keeps reading, and looking at me, and reading, and looking at me. Then, without even introducing himself, he says matter of factly "Your not gonna get any drugs here, we dont treat pill fiends" Holy f**k, I though, I felt so small, so humiliated, so slapped in the face and spit on. I was speechless. I stumbled with the words excuse me, and he goes 'I dont like people like you, you here for one thing, and I am not giving it to you. Go to shoprite, and get yourself some aspirin, and dont come back here." I pulled my dignity off the floor, and left. So about 2 days later , I get a call from the new doctors office, and its the receptionist. She keeps telling me they made a terrible mistake. It turns out my records had like a listing of me getting the percocet every month, but my MRI's reports, and x-rays that were supposed to be transferred by courrier, never got there. SO this doc thought I was coming into the old place, picking up my 60, and walking out. The few notes my old doc had written were very vague in the med records, and more detailed in the mri and xray reports. Needless to say I never went back to the new place. So thats it. Just felt like getting that off my chest. Anyone else have any horror stories?

I went to the doctor....down at the hospital.....He said "son it says here your 26"..."but thats impossible".........."it looks like you could be 45"........

Yeah, I can relate! After my last spinal fusion w/rods & pedicle screws, the fourth spinal fusion, my surgeon decided I was "cured", and ready suddenly to return to work full time, after he kept me off for 7 months, because he was scared to death it wouldn't hold! Now, I could have returned to work full time, and NEEDED to return to work full time, I just needed adequate pain managment. He referred me back to my brand new PCP, who agreed to continue prescribing vicodin, 5 mg 60 per month, which would have worked ok if I could stay at home and lie around all day! But, I had to go back to work. The PCP after about a month decided I needed to be "weaned" from my meds, when I refused and told him I needed a Pain Management referral, he said ok, made an appointment, 4 weeks later and refused to prescribe anything other than 30 5mg vicodin! So, I'm now working full time(since the surgeon released me, I had to if I wanted to keep my house), I go to the emergency room, where they had ALL my medical records, from tons of caudal injections and 2 MRI's and where I had 2 surgeries! Same thing happened to me, the doc actually told me I was a "drug seeker" and refused to prescribe for me. I ended up going to another ER in town and the doc told me they were neanderthals, and graciously prescribed 60 percocet to get me thru to the PM referral. Then the pain management doc got a call from my PCP, who got a call from the ER doc & the pain managmemnt doc said he didn't think he could "help me". I ended up suicidal, and my best friend in a town 400 miles away got me in to see her pain management doc there, (who I still fly to see, every 4 months!) I still should report the er doc!

One thing you can do that may make a difference, is to go to: http://www.jcaho.org/general+public/public+input/report+a+complaint/report+a+complaint.htm
and file a complaint. The JCAHO accredits most health care facilities in the U.S. and if enough people complain about sub-standard pain care, the facility may be penalized. The JCAHO will use complaints it received during the facilities next survey. I believe complaining to the JCAHO is one of the best ways of achieving positive change in a hospital. Eddie

I once had to have a tooth extracted, because it had fractured, and was causing me great pain. I went to this dentist my friend reccomended me to. He told me he could not do a root canal or Best if kept off the board because of the fracture, and wrote me a referral for an oral surgeon to have the tooth extracted. The dentist seemed to be in a big hurry the whole time during my exam. ( One of those chain places; multiple offices all over town) I have complete medical insurance, but NO dental insurance. He asked me if I had dental insurance, and when I told him no, I swear he did a complete turn around in his attitude. From in a hurry, to downright rude. He wrote me a rx. for vicodin. He claimed they could not do the extraction there. I immediately called the oral surgeon and explained my problem, and the fact I had a referral from this dentist. Their office could not get me in for 2 weeks!! I took the painkillers for 1 week, and ran out. This was terrible pain, by the way. I went back to the original dentist and told them I had an appt. that was a week away, and needed more pain killers prescribed. The receptionist/nurse attempted to give me a hard time about prescribing more meds!!! Let me tell you, I am a different person when in severe pain! There was a waiting room full of people. All I could think of was the fact I had spent $ 100.00 there the week before, and how rude and indifferent the whole staff seemed, especially the doctor. I spoke loudly, but calmly, ( and I made sure the whole waiting
room heard me) The doctor you referred me to can not get me in until next week, I expect some relief from this pain. Call your head dentist and your office manager out here right now. I have had enough of this attitude. Here comes the manager. I told her to call the oral surgeon and verify my appt. could not be done until 1 week later. I will sit here in your waiting room until I get what I came here for. Then I sat down. The whole
waiting room was staring in disbelief! She must have called the other dentist to verify, because 5 minutes later, out comes the dentist with a bottle of meds.(no Rx) the actual meds! and apologizes to me and hands them to me. They charged me the same price my insurance co. would have if I would have had to get it filled at pharmacy. Please note: this kind of action is totally against my character, but as you all know, pain is intolerable, especially when there is relief available. I have since found another general dentist who is MUCH better.
