Does anyone know if the new drug Lexapro actually does enhance the effects of Xanax, which is what my friend's doc told her when he lowered her X dose (medical literature seems to support it--but testimonials from patients seem less enthusiastic.)
My friend is very low income and has to pay for the prescriptions herself; so if anyone has an opinion on the efficacy of Lexapro....you'll be doing your good deed for the day (by saving her the money if this is just another "miracle SSRI").
Take care

On Monday, Attorney General John Ashcroft issued a terrorism warning asking all Americans to be on high alert this week. Then on Friday, he announcedthat the period of high alert would be extended indefinitely. I think I speak for all Americans when I say, "B*tch, I can't be any more alert!"How about this, okay? How about YOU be on full alert, I'm gonna freeze my head like Walt Disney and then you can wake me up when everything's cool, okay? Back to you, Jimmy. --Tina Fey on SNL Weekend Update post 9/11

Ok... My doc tried to sell me on Lexapro stating it is the greatest thing out on the market now. I asked him if it would stop panic attacks like Xanax and he stated...'Well, no but it will eventually erradicate a majority of the symptoms of anxiety." Umm... That's not what I was asking him. Needless to say, I took him up on his samples and received a script for it back in Sept. '02 - think that's when it was approved by the FDA. The way it's been explained to me is that Lexapro is identical to Celexa, only the drug companies have isolated the isotopes in Celexa and enhanced the SSRI to eliviate some of the side-effects with Celexa. If you're male and have been on Celexa for a number of years, you'll know what I mean. I'll have to agree that Lexapro did eliviate some of the side-effects of the older Celexa brand - BUT it does nothing for panic disorder or anxiety, IMO - just helps Chronic Depressive Disorder like Celexa did. So I called my local pharmacist and asked him if there was any 'potential' drug interactions with co-dosing Lexapro and Xanax. He stated "No, that they could be taken together - however warned that drowsiness may be increased". That was never the case for me though. You can always call any Eckerds or Walgreens and ask to speak to a pharmacist about drug interactions. Good luck.

A quick thanks to both of you for the valuable info...seems like my friend's doc is either ill-informed or just plain lying; she (friend) had been on Celexa in the past and it did not help her particular condition...and the doc knows this.

Celexa helped me a bit with anxiety, however, I stopped taking it because it made me want to sleep all the time(even after halving the dose per Dr.'s instructions) I can't imagine taking some other med. in addition to this one, with the side effect of "it will make you sleepy". What's the idea behind this reasoning? You won't feel anxiety because you're always taking naps?? LOL.
