Hi All....
Was just wondering if anyone who orders feels its safer to have delivery (when available) to a PO Box...in my state PO Boxes are not anonymous - you must provide a state or Federal ID to open one and they do record the information. In addition you must provide your physical mailing address which the USPS confirms by sending a registered letter for you there and you must be present to sign for it. When you've received your reg letter you then bring it to the P.O. and the box is made available for use.

I don't think it is any "safer" however, it does have some real positive attributes. First, it gives you a second address for mailings, reducing the volume at one address and hence perhaps reducing suspicion. Second and more importantly for me, they sign for registered mail so you don't have to be there when the postman arrives. This is great for convenience. My own opinion is that having a P.O. box as an address may heighten scrutiny of that mail (I have nothing to confirm this, just my own opinion) so I like the fact that my P.O. box has a street address so it can't be distinguished from a regular address. All in all, I am most pleased with the PO box.

Thank you both for your replies. Bhamdave, I do always try to do a search using keywords before I post a Q...I imagine it must get annoying seeing similar Qs pop up time and time again. I realized just now that I only searched within the last week rather than all posts. Sorry bout that.
Raoul I'm guessing your PO Box is something like Mail Boxes Etc? Wish I had one close.

Customs seems to open more mail addressed to POBs and PMBs than to street addresses. OTOH, a controlled delivery at a PO is harder to carry off than at a residence (because they could end up waiting for days for it to be picked up).

One more tidbit of info on P.O. Boxes, UPS and Fedex will not deliver to P.O. Boxes. That is thru the US Post Office. A better option would be to rent a box from places like Mailboxes Plus. These places will accept packages from UPS and Fedex and even sign for the package. You can even use a suite number so it sounds like your package is going to a real office.

My Mother lives in a little town that has a rather archaic rule. If you live within 1 square mile of the post office, your are not provided with home delivery...you must secure a PO Box and pick up your mail at the PO. So, even though she resides in a single family dwelling, all her mail must be addressed to a PO Box. It is amazing the problems/inconvenience that creates. Most of her packages need to be shipped to my house because many companies won't ship to PO Boxes. Lots of other issues as well. If you ar considering one, I would take some of the advice above and go through a Mail BOX company. LOTS easier.

The town I lived in prior to moving here had the same rule Sox (and not just 1 mile but the entire town)...and the unbelievable thing was that there weren't enough PO Boxes to go around! People were on waiting lists for YEARS!

The last time I had a PO box, it wasn't from the post office, it was from a company called mailboxes USA, they privided me with a Suite# - Which makes people think that you are sending mail to an office. The clerk suggested the suite # because she said that people often come in looking for an office, not realizing that it is a mailing service. Also they accept and sign all paper work from all companies. Keep in mind though, it has been quite some time since I've done this.
Thought this might be of some interest. If you're serious about going this route, PM me for other suggestions.
