Nathan Gale, who was shot dead by a police officer during a shooting spree in a Columbus Ohio metal nightclub, was taking psych meds for a mental disorder. He was apparently viewed around tatoo parlors and the city's metal community as one of the oddest birds in town.
Anyone want to bet he was put on SSRIs by the VA AND was drinking heavily?

I'll take that bet. I happen to know from first hand experience and watching others, that if one is taking SSRIs, that better be it; even certain herbal supplements are not safe.
Yet another misrepresentation from Big PHARMA; SSRIs are not the "clean" drugs they were made out to be. In fairness, maybe they (SSRIs) had to be around for twenty or more years before this was made clear.
Back in the day, when I bartended, people popped their Prozac when they saw fit, with their beer, at the end of the day at my bar. I saw a change over the course of an hour; more, just more anger, irritation.
Prozac and its ilk work alone, with therapy. For some people. Mixed with alcohol, it is a recipe for failure at least, disaster at best. Mixed with cocaine, speed, etc, and alcohol, Prozac has featured in some prominent murders and suicides. I don't know what the drug was in this case, but I am very sad that once again, someone fell thru the cracks, and took five people with him; not to mention the trauma of the survivors, who will probably be pushed in the direction of SSRIs as well, to 'get over things.'

I'll take that bet too. Like any physician warns,"take one of these, have a beer and it's like you just took 3 of these".

prettyday,
I don't doubt that your story is accurate. However, anyone taking Prozac "when the saw fit" were abusing the drug. There are hundreds of drugs that will cause ill effects if abused. SSRI's are not high on that list. I'm not defending Prozac... I've never taken it,but I have taken other SSRI's, w/o any side effects at all.

I'm gonna throw end my opinion here for what it's worth: I went through a very, very serious depression of approximately 4 years duration, during which time my docs had me on a list of 8 to 12 SSRI and anti-psychotics, etc. I had serious side-effects within 12 to 48 hours of taking more than a couple of them as prescribed. On one, I couldn't shut my eyes without completely losing my balance and falling over - sitting or standing. And no, I was not drinking with the meds or using any unprescribed meds or herbal supplements. When a drug didn't cause a crazy and obvious side effect (but didn't demonstrate any real improvement in my condition either), it was just added to a growing list of what I was taking every day.
Probably the best thing that ever happened to me was losing my COBRA'd insurance entirely and having to go cold-turkey off all that [censored]. You know what? My depressive symtoms resolved by at least 75% WITHOUT the depression meds. And the improvement has be sustained and consistent for 2 years.
I'm sorry for the tragedy and I'm sorry that the pharmaceutical industry has continued to overmarket these medications with cute little cartoons and lovely voiceovers as almost entirely safe and effective.
Best,
Wolf

I spoke from personal experience knowing violent, irrational people who were drinking while on SSRI's. You seem like one of them, dsmmcmlmnopqrstuvwxyz.

not to mention the horrible withrawl from ssri (paxil).I am on it and in my opinion no longer need it but when I try to get off of it I become someone terrible. I'm violent, depressed, and just go crazy. I hate that I even started this medication.

dsmmcm's response was to pretty day, not you. And her reply was merely expressing an alternate viewpoint, and in a most polite way...you sound far more violent & drunken than he or she did! Your view's are welcome here, but so are other's views...live & let live.
