The point of no return
      #203684 - 11/29/04 06:10 AM

I noticed that now that I have taken hydro and oxy that the "lower stregth meds" dont work anymore. I have been off hydeo and oxy long enough that my tolerance is lower. but is it true that once you go to stronger meds that the t-3s and darvocet dont work anymore. I would like to be able to go to them because docs are more liberal with them but is it true taht once you get a to them you cant get comfort from lower pain meds????

Sadly, that is the case with me. I find that darvocet is basically worthless to me now. I don't know though...if I were drug free for a long period of time...maybe darvocet or something similar might be effective. Good question. I'm anxious to read replies. Love, juliah

I find that this is more true with benzodiazepines than with opiates. You have to have patience- it takes some time- but you will most definitely lose your tolerance to opiates.

Case in point: heroin addicts often relapse and fatally OD after they've been clean for a few weeks or months because they overestimate their tolerance.

This is absolutely true, positively accurate, I know from personal experience!!!!!!

My friend who's a nurse, had a boyfriend who OD'd on hydrocodone assuming he could resume his previous dose after being clean for six months when in fact, it killed him. Or should I say he killed himself.

Never take the chance. You just don't know. Our bodies change all the time. Our chemistry changes according to many different factors. Never assume you can pick up where you left off when it comes to resuming your medication dosage.

But how long does it take for your tolerance to get lower?

I've never taken much more than codiene for my pain, but I noticed lately that I have to take more and more and more for it to be effective. To the point it is scaring me. I can a lot of codiene and have almost no relief and almost no side effects (drowsy, etc) except I just feel irritable and still in pain.

Recently I was out of town for a week, and purposely left my codiene at home and toughed it out with large doses of ibuprofen to see if I could resume at a lower dose of codiene when I returned. No difference in tolerance level though, at all. I was amazed and freaked out by that.

I have only been taking codiene regularly for about a year, and never noticed any difference in my tolerance level until the past month. Now I am afraid that I will have to take dangerously high dosages to get relief. I don't want to go on any "stronger" meds, because frankly I am afraid of meds like Percoset, etc. It's probably an irrational fear, but I just don't want to move on to the "next level" or something. Does that make sense?

I know I need to talk to my doctor, but I'm afraid she'll just prescribe me something stronger and I don't want that. I want my mild codiene to just work the way it used to. I am always afraid of addiction, even with codiene, but I rationalize that it's weaker, so less dangerous. I've always requested nothing stronger than codiene even when offered stronger meds, because I'm afraid to start taking anything stronger. I am actually embarrased for being so weird about it...am probably being stupid. I don't know.

Stronger than CODEINE? Do you realize that codeine is what hydroCODone is made from, and that codeine, hydro, percocet, and morphine are all basically a variation of HEROIN? If you read up Codeine is just as or more dangerous than any other "stronger" meds. Codeine is what people took before there were any real pain meds. If you need pain relief, you need pain relief. Codeine is absolutely no less harmful that hydro or percs. Taking more codeine than prescribed is absolutely more dangerous than taking a more effective drug at the prescribed level. Also, when you talk to your doctor don't be scared that she will prescribe something stronger, that is ludacris. Consider yourself lucky if your doctor does care enough and sympathize with your condition. Codeine is just as addicting, and far more unrefined as the newer, more effective pain medications.
