What about check-by-phone service? That is an option offered by some non-prescription merchants, so I would suspect that it's a workable option. (It just seems like COD orders is that they would appear to be easier to "red-flag")

This is deja vu with what evolved in the online casino industry....the survivors planned ahead and accepted Paypal and Neteller, etc. They are both very secure online payment processors that you can link to your bank or credit card to pay for things that the card co's won't take directly....Plus with OPs the COD option is always there since you physically get something vs. online casinos where you just have virtual dollars going back and forth (Assuming you win and need to cashin!).
Word has it Rxhotdeals "temporarily" isn't accepting cards and only does COD orders since yesterday 3/31...friend said they told her they will have it fixed by next week around Wed supposedly...she wasn't sure if it was related to this thread and I'm not either...
Has anyone actually heard of any OPs no longer accepting cards due to MC/Visa closing their merchant account or is this still in the rumor phase that may or may not result in action? I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

I would think tht this would more so effect IOP's. How can they not let a Pharmacy like Woody's charge a CC without shutting down Walgreens and CVS along the way?

Read the original post. US-based pharmacies which either ask for a prescription or full records shouldn't have much of a problem with these new VISA/MC policies.
Before this happened last week, there have always merchant providers (both 3rd-party or directly through banks) that didn't allow online pharmacies on a company policy basis. Last week the ones that did allow (such as Pago eTransactions and Paysystems) did cut off the pharmacy accounts at the behest of VISA and MC. There are plenty of other merchant accounts and payment systems, however.

We use a couple different merchant account systems, and they have all been affected by the problem detailed in the letter below. What this is going to mean is many OPs (and especially IOPs) will stop processing credit cards while they look for alternatives (see: Pharm88, ImportedDrugs, Pharmatico).

Attention Merchants :
As of March 24th 2004 Visa / Mastercard abruptly changed the rules of the game and shut down all merchant accounts that have not satisfied their compliance check list for on-line pharmacies. This is not permanent, but we will need to make sure that we conform to there check list.
Here is what we need to be compliant:
1. All foreign pharmacies that are selling to U.S customers must have a fulfillment center in the U.S not imported in from outside the country.
2. All orders must contain the prescription in order.
3. U.S patients must have face to face consultations with the doctors.
As you can see this makes it very hard to do business over the internet, but we may be able to salvage some business and get the account turned back on.
I was trying very hard for this not to happen but it was out of my control and we may have to wait for our legislators before we are back in business.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or concerns.
Regards,

I remember reading this post back then, but I dont ever remember anyone being affected or having any problems. was there a big upset for a week or a few days when the 24th rolled around and these new VISA/MASTERCARD things took effect? I dont remember there being anything noteworthy happeneing. I had forgotten all bout that

Well I guess this Visa/Matercard thing answers the question of so many I have read in various posts here -"How come they only take C.O.D.?" Well I guess they knew this was coming Just an opinion.

yeah yer right. I just always figured the ones who only did COD were just trying to avoid chargebacks ect.

I have 3 CC's... one is pre-paid. They come in handy big time.
www.mymccard.com
I charge it up at my local CVS anytime i want to use it.
Originally how it starts out, is you buy a starter card, and get charged a one time fee of $9.95. After this, you go home, and activate your card on the website i provided above. As far as what kind of other fee's are involved, their are two. Anytime you want to charge up your card, you pay a $4.95 fee plus whatever money you want to put on it. Then, every month, they charge you a $4.95 maintence fee. That is all. If you don't use the card at all one month, then obviously the only fee you pay is $4.95. It takes 2-3 weeks to recieve Credit Card after activated. (Mine came in 10 days, they just tell u approx 2-3 weeks)
Hope this helps.
