help with going to neugologist
      #201907 - 11/20/04 11:54 AM

Hello, could someone please help me. Don't judge me i am not a fraud. I guess all the nrop's are down, and i can't get any meds. I have an order in 'processing' with prestomeds, and i don't have a cc to use nhrg, or records. So i decided to go to a neugologist about my back on monday. My question is how do i go about convincing the doctor that i need hydro's for my back. I've tried everything for it and i know what works and what doesn't. I didn't have a injury to my back to prove i am in pain. But i feel like there is tiny razor blades in my spine right around the middle of my shoulder blades, it hurts to bend over or backwards. I am active and any little movement causes spasms. I am not asking anyone to help me 'cheat' but with all the controversy about narcotics it's so hard to get them. Please any advice on how to convice the doctor, or how to get around a records op would be great. You can pm me.
Impatiently waiting, Angelique.

Why are you going to a neurologist? Based on your complaints, I think a consult with an orthopedist would be the place to start. There is nothing you can say to "convince" a doctor to give you pain meds. I would guess that with symptoms like you describe, a cat scan or MRI would be in order to find the root of the problem.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I called two orthopedist first and both of them said for spine pain i have to go to a neurologist. I wasn't exactly searching for a way to convince the doctor just more on advice to make him understand how i hurt since there isn't like a bulging disk in my spine to actually see.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself on this. But getting a doctor to prescribe narcotics isn't going to happen at the end of your initial visit. The odds are very slim. If he doesn't know you from Adam; if there is no prior records from another doctor documenting the progression of your symptoms, he's going to want to start from scratch, meaning x-rays and MRI's. It's not like they turn you around, look at your back, and say, "oh I see a bulging disc."

But if you've tried OTC anti-inflamatories, pain medicines for a period of time with no relief, be sure to tell the doctor this. If you've tried prescription anti-inflamatories or other prescriptions to get relief with no results, be sure to tell him this.

If this is something you've been dealing with over a period of years, and it's something that has progressively gotten worse over time; be Sure to tell him this.

If you're experiencing burning, stabbing, knifelike sensations and Any numbness, be sure to tell him. These are indications that you could have nerves involved in your condition and not just muscular problems.

If you're experiencing pain during the night. If it's keeping you from sleeping or if the pain is waking you up at night while you sleep, be sure to tell him.

If it's affecting any of your extremeties such as arms, fingers, thigh, knee, toes be sure to tell him .. espeically if the effects include the burning, knifelike, or numbness indicated above.

Make a concise list of your symptoms before you go. Be sure to list when they began and how they began and how they've progressed. Write down any questions you have before you go.

And most importantly, don't go in there in a frantic state, appearing desperate. Be articulate and direct about the level of pain you are in ... let him/her know your level of concern over your amount of pain and how it's affecting your ability to function; but do it in a calm, rational manner. It's a catch 22 if you directly ask for narcotics: Many times you won't get it if you don't ask; and just as many times you won't get it if you Do ask for them directly...they get suspicious.

Most of all, don't get your hopes up of walking out of your first appointment with a prescription for narcotics .... Your best hope is to walk out of there with the appointments set up or in the making for your X-rays and MRI's.

I don't think you need to worry about anyone helping you "cheat." When it comes to spinal conditions, they're going to rely mainly on test results ... so "cheating" isn't really an option.

In the meantime, I wish you all the best in finding relief from your pain ... it can be a horrible way to live when there's no relief from it. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you to keep your eye out on the board for how these NROP cycle up and down. There may be something that pops up any day. Then again, it can always get even worse than it is now. So I think you're doing the right thing by starting down the road of going to a doctor.

You're welcome; and feel free to PM me once this whole thing gets started.

I've been where you are right now ... the worry over the "whatifs" and "what will I do's" just add more stress.

Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and play the good 'ole doctor game...try this-doesn't work...try something else--doesn't work and so on until you have exhausted everything. Even though YOU know what works and what doesn't, the doc may just make you try everything under the sun until you get what you want.

It's a bunch of BS IMO but sometimes you just gotta work the system the way they want you to....

sucks big time but it does eventually pay off...

Exactly, and in the mean time, you've gotten yourself a set of medical records documenting your symptoms. And you'll have a set of test results documenting your condition(s). All of which, you need to be sure and get copies of along the way .. very important.

Interesting...I guess they make you try everything from heat, to ibuprofen, to extra strength Tylenol so they can cover their butts to the feds if they have to.

I find most Dcotors want to know what meds you have had success with in the past, and I do not hesitate to tell them what works for me. If you are truly in pain and honest with them in your meeting then you stand a good chance of getting what you seek. If they insist on you trying another med, just call them in pain on a Friday or Saturday night to let them know it is not working, along with the phone number of your 24-hour pharmacy.
