Has anyone tried this? I hear it is a combination of a mild analgesic with anti anxiety properties. Does it work? It sounds like something that might work for me since I do get some awful tension headaches when my anxiety gets out of hand. Also does it have caffeine? Because I can't take anything if it'll make me speedy.

Thanks in advance.

They work great on tension headaches, and do a decent job on my migraines too. Bad news is, they contain caffiene. Fioricet is Butalbital/APAP/Caffiene, so you can often get it cheaper by ordering generic 'butalbial'which is also the same combo. There IS another med out there that has the butalbital and APAP but no caffiene, but for the life of me I can't find it's name or a link to where I found it. I, too, hate the caffiene so I would like to try this non-caffinated version sometime.

If I come across the drug name or a link i'll post..

ETA - if my google skills are worth anything, I think the butalbital + APAP combo is named Phrenilin . Good luck!

You're correct, it's called Phrenilin and used to be found at PKW. I don't think they are prescribing any more. Other than that, I've never seen another online source that had the Butalbital combo without the caffeine in it. Since Butalbital is a barbituate, they seem to cancel each other out on me. But, everyone is different.

I have been looking for DAYS straight for a phrenilin source online also and for the LIFE of me can't find one anywhere. My doc gave me a brand called "Promacet" and I know there is "Bucet" all the same thing,(butalbital-acetminophen) but the pharmacy hadn't even heard of them and had to order them. All I know is when I get a migraine I want to sleep not lay there with the "caffeine jitters"- plus it kills my gut. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I know that fioricet has caffeine in it, but it doesn't make me jittery at all. In fact, when I took one I couldn't function at all. It totally kicked my butt. I couldn't see straight and it was impossible to stay awake after about an hour. I thought that I might have a tolerance to it since I regularly take hydro, but it didn't work out that way. They must be quite different chemically from hydro. They did make me rather nauseous though.

The two meds that I take that are simiar to Fiorecet and please excuse my spelling are Phrenlan Forte and Midren (both generic names I believe). Neither have the caffeine in them, but both have the same meds as Fiorecet, although Midren also has a sedative in it. I have never seen either at a OP. I get them from my head doc. Hope this helps some in your search.

I think they work pretty good, with the exception is they can keep me awake sometimes.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Midrin does not have Butalbital (the barbituate) in it. The only common incredient is Acetaminiphen. It's got 3 different ingredients: Each capsule contains Isometheptene Mucate 65 mg, Dichloralphenazone 100 mg, and Acetaminophen 325 mg. I copied that straight from www.rxlist.com Here. I know there is a generic for Midrin, but don't remember the name. It has a mild sedative in it, where Fioricet has a barbituate in it. Believe it or not, they are 2 seperate categories.

For the poster looking for Phenelin, I've never seen it on the net except for PKW and we all know where they went - AWAY. Good luck in your search. I hope you've tried the search engines and sorted through them.

Oh, no biggie. I have been through it all with migraine meds. Also, I looked online just now and cannot find any sources for it.

Ya, I also take Midrin but my doc only likes to give them 20 at a time with a new office visit each time @ $100 a visit so it gets a little expensive.(I'm sure ya'll understand that!)The phrenilin doesn't knock me out like Midrin though. I have actually found a place online to get Midrin. It ain't cheap though. I appreciate all the help anyway. I just can't believe it's so easy to get Hydo,Stadol etc and all I want is a measly little Butalbital. Crazy. Well, anyway if anyone happens to run across it, let me know.

To 1hotmamma, did you ever find a source for Phrenilin? I'm with you in that it seems so crazy you can get so many more potent meds online and you can certainly get Fioricet, but not just plain butalbital/apap without the caffeine. I'm trying to get my local MD to order it because my local CVS carries it, but my doc is away this week and i just ran out of my last scipt from PKW.. which apparently folded. Let me know if you found any. Thanks a lot!

I know this is coming in late, but I think the generic for Midrin is "duradrin" (likely spelled somewhat differently). I took Midrin for two years when I discovered it as a "wonder drug" for my migraines (nothing else had worked). After a couple of years it stopped working - just like that. Worked one day, never worked again after that. Very strange.

Anyway, after much experimenting with Zomig, Cafergot, Imitrex, all the levels of hydro as well as the paracetamol/codeine tablets (which worked the best of all that bunch) I finally found Fioricet and it's been a fantastic life saver for years now.

It's like gold, though for some reason - the price tends to skyrocket every now and then without ever getting cheap again. I don't know what that's all about. However, there are no jitters or other sort of "speedy" response. As the prior poster stated - the butalbital and caffeine work together to cancel the other's effects on the nervous system. I don't know what I'd do without them.

The downside is that if you have cluster/chronic headaches and take this frequently you are apt to get "rebound" headaches caused by the caffeine (much like coffee drinkers who stop drinking coffee) and that's something very real to consider for those with very bad headache symptoms. It's worth the trade off for me and for others, too I'm sure. I just wanted to add my small bit of experience in case it should help.
