Well, I was involved in a fairly severe car accident on Tuesday evening. I went right to the ER were they gave me a shot of demerol/visteril and then took x-rays of my spine and neck. While the pain shot did help, it wore off fairly quickly. The ER doc said "Well, there are no breaks but you could have some severe muscle tear, atrophy. Here are 10 5mg Vicodins and some Robaxin."
WTF? 10 freaking pain pills. They were gone in two days and now I am severe agony. I have missed work since ( I am a waiter so I have to be extremely mobile and life rather heavy trays). My question: what do I do? I really cannot afford a $110 consult and $90 worth of meds. I am seeing my GP today so would it be wise to bring this up and ask for a pain specialist? Any help would help thanks folks you've been a godsend sice I joined this board a couple years back.
Peace.

Explain exactly what you have said here, you received only 10 pills and now you are still in extreme pain without and pain meds.
Ask him to help or to get you to somebody that will and if that is going to take awhile tell him you will need something for pain until then.
Goodluck, and don't let them push you aside, you need something for your pain.

I must address a few of your issues so I quoted your entire post. First of all, if you are not kept over night in the hospital from a severe car accident, if you walk in, or taken in by ambulance, they will not give you a large prescription. Every single Dr. in an ER will tell you to immediately consult a physician upon your release. Even the forms they give you will state that. You had to sign them at some point of your hospital experience.
If you are sitting around a few days in pain, you must not have consulted an MD. If your injuries are as serious as you state, you should be dealing with them on an ASAP basis. Most traumas DO get worse as the days go on and you may need some physical therapy as well. A lot of times just having pain killers is not the answer.
Last, but not least, the OPs are not going to provide you with opiate based, schedule III medications without adequate proof/records to substantiate your injuries. My humble advice to you would be to seek out your regular physician first and get an adequate assessment of what is wrong with you. Then take it from there. From what you wrote, that seemed to be your next step. Maybe you will get the help you need once your diagnosis is on record.
Good Luck!

I was going to add what I think was already covered. The ER is a very short term thing and if you had been severely hurt, the ER doc would have given more than what he did.
Get to you local doc immediately or at least a walk in clinic with your ER records and they might help.
Car wreck tend to give you a lot of soreness that goes away after a while.

I would calmly explain that you HAVE TO MAKE A LIVING. You should be able to even get percocet 5/325's. Not knowing anything about you and your medical history, I would still recomend calmly describing your situation to your doctor. If you need a referral to a pain doc, get one. Go through the same drill. Don't give up. Remember, you need to work, the doctors should understand this concept.

A couple of things...a MVA may not show all the physical problems that you may have for MONTHS after the accident.
You should keep accurate track of medical appointments, meds, and how you are feeling each, work missed due to pain, and pain levels.
You can be reimbursed for all the days you missed if you were not at fault for this accident.
I am like 16 years post accident, and I had to settle one year after the accident. They said I would have trouble "down the road". The road I am on now, is degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, dessicated disc, disc herniations, all because of a stinking car accident. Okay, may the DDD would of happened eventually but the discs affected are not usually impacted by disease but are by rear car accidents. Follow up, see doctors, get referrals, make the effort...do the best you can to get resolution.
I wish they had the tests they have now...they said to me, "you're as good as you're going to get" and cut me loose.
I wish you the best.
take care...

do you have insurance or are you having to pay outta the pocket for the ER visit? those ER's are horrible. they charge like above street prices for meds. it is insane. plus it cost like a gazillion dollars just to walk in to an ER
