I was sitting at the computer with one of my legs tucked under the other for a long while... reading these DB posts that I'm addicted to. When I finally got up, my left foot was completely numb. I made the mistake of trying to walk on it, and stubbed my foot really hard into the ground (or something -not sure what, but it really hurt!).
For the past two days, it has hurt to walk or flex my big toe upwards. I asked my s/o if he thought it might be broken, and was told it'd be black and blue if it were.
Today (3 days after the incident), my big "piggy" is throbbing, and there's a bruise the size of a half-dollar directly under the toe.
I'm not insured, so I'm reluctant to have it x-rayed. Even if I did and it was found to be broken, is there anything they'd do for it?

I am not a doc, but I know that toe injuries always hurt a lot.
And there is not a lot they can do for the little toe, but the big toe takes a lot of balance on for you, or many people, so if you have doubts, go check it out. While it is this way.
Best of luck.

The four *other* piggies can heal just fine if taped to an adjacent toe but the big piggie is so instrumental for balance it never gets a break. Even if it's not broken if something is torn, having it heal badly could mean a lifetime of toe trouble.
Worst case is surgery and a cast, best case is doc saying try to stay off your feet for a week or so. But it's really better to find out which it is. I'd reluctantly go to the doc.

sorry to hear about your toe. as i am not a doctor i cannot offer you any qualified advice but i can tell you about a similar experience i had and what i did about it. when i was 12 or 13 i was in school playing ball at recess. somehow the ball was hit to me weird and i tried to catch it just at the moment that it bounced off the ground and i broke my ring finger on my right hand. the pain was excruciating. i started to get very light-headed (sign of shock, i later realized) and i felt like i was going to pass out so i left the game to sit on a bench. one of my classmates approached me and asked me if i was alright. i lied and said i was fine. she said that i looked white as a sheet. i don't remember much after that. i never told anyone about it because i was afraid that i would get in trouble and i didn't want to be punished. but my finger got really swollen and it stayed swollen and tender for a long time. even just touching it was agonizing. i remember this because had to hide my hand for a long time until the swelling went down so no one would notice. i don't remember if it turned black and blue or not. this was a long time ago. but my finger is now crooked, and even after all these years, certain things still aggravate it, like if someone squeezes my hand too roughly. it gets all swollen and hurts again for a couple of weeks. thank God the broken finger is on my right hand! (i am a right-handed guitarist, i need full dexterity on my left hand)
so my advice to you is if you don't want a crooked toe you should go get it checked.
i can't believe i remembered that much of that experience, makes me feel kind of weird thinking about it. feel better writing about it somehow. but i think i need to bury it again.
good luck with your toe. hope you feel better.
