I have a question for anyone who uses the Duregesic Patches. I use the 75's and I have a real difficult time getting them to stay on. I did start with the 25's a long time a go and didn't have too much trouble with them as they are smaller. But I am now using the 75's and they are larger.
Does anyone have any advice as to how to keep them stuck on longer?
Is it true that once they peal up a little that they are rendered useless and taping them back down is not an option?
I do use the covers that Jansen provides but even with them, they will only stay on for two days at the most.
My doc gives me enough so that I can change them every 48 hours as opposed to 72 but I don't understand how anyone keeps them on 72 hours as they are meant to.
I don't understand how people keep those birth control patches on so long. That would make me very nervous..lol
Any ideas welcome...

Hi Suzi =
I had the same problem with the duragesic patches - like you they only stayed stuck for at most 48 hours. I tried the covers. duct tape - even tried superglue on the edges.
I had the same problem with the nicorette patches.
Eventually I had to give up on them - but if they work for you and your Dr. is willing to give you one every 48 hours they may work. My Dr. just put me back on pills - but he gives me enough to work.
Good luck and if 48 hours is enough time then stick with them - the duragesix\c works good in that they have little sedation but get rid of the pain so you can do things.
And really that's all any of us want to be able to live WITHOUT being a zombie from the medicine.

You might want to try the "water proof tape" they are in the first aid area of any pharmcy. I used it when I was a paramedic to tape down IVs on patients who were sweating alot. they really stick on. you can use that to add support to the patch "JMO"

I used to be on Duragesic Patches for over a year and had various problems with them. I can't think of the company who makes them (would be on box/package) but they have a good website that has answers to various issues with them and you could also e-mail the company. Good luck . . .

Thanks so much for the ideas. They are working fine now that I can change every 48 hours but it is a lot cooler right now. Once Spring comes and the heat and humidity return, I will be in trouble again..lol
I guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Hey,
Check this out. I am watching CSI right now and they are investigating a case about a kid who overdosed by putting a Duregesic Patch on his palm!
Apparently it absorbes too fast through the pores on the palm. You would think that my doctor might have mentioned that? Not that I ever even considered putting it on my palm, as that would my very inconvenient.
Do you think this is true or just part of TV drama?

I am also scripted Duragesic for every 48 hours, because not only would they come off after two days, but I was starting to have withdrawal symptoms every 3 days. The patch would always be all wrinkled up, and I do not think I was getting enough medicine. I have also been putting them on my upper arms, with much better luck that my chest.
I use a product made by Nexcare, called Tegaderm. They are clear covers, which seem to hold the patches down very well. I also use a little betadyne to help dry out the skin, which helps them stick better.
You would think with things like the birth control patch, or hormone patches that stay on a week, that Jannsen could come up with a better adhesive.
For me, the patch controls the pain very well, and I hope they do come up with a better adhesive in the future, so that they are more compatible with people.
I still do have breakthrough pain, and Norco seems to help a little, but there is still a small dip in pain control. For the most part, I am pain free though. The best part, is that I almost always wake up pain free, which was nearly impossible with a short acting oral medication likee Norco. Waking up pain free is the best! Before, my day would start off on a bad note, and as any pain sufferer knows, the day does not get much better.
Best of luck to you, and I hope this helps a little..
