I don't know much about it but I do know it's a prescription med usually prescribed for headaches; I know someone who took it and they said it messed them all up, made them feel really sick, it's not a narcotic

I wish it was OTC. It's prescription only and I've had them before. If I remember correctly, they are rather large pills. They are for migraines and caused me some serious drowsiness and actually relieved some anxiety I had for awhile.

I used midrin for migraines- I actually opened up a capsule to see if they forgot to put medicine in it! Did not feel a thing or help with my pain. It was a prescription from a family doctor.

I, too, take midrin and it's not meant to be a painkiller. Whenever I feel a migraine coming on, I pop two of the right away and about 3/4 of the time, it stops the headache.

Not OTC. Actually, they're now listed as a controlled substance since one of the ingredients is in the same family of choral hydrate.

It never did much for my migraines either. My last neuro wouldn't even prescribe it to try it out again. It was one of the first meds I tried and it just didn't work on my headaches.

hi- I didn't realize it wasn't meant to be a painkiller. Is it a "precursur" (sp?) to the triptan drugs like imitrex? Just curious although I doubt I'd try it again. I had tried it about 15 years ago or longer and it just didn't work for me.

It's not in the triptan family but was available by pill before imitrex was. Other than that, check it out on www.rxlist.com. for more specifics.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones midrin works for. As far as imitrex goes, I'm allergic to that drug and others similar to it (hives, terrible nausea, etc). I'm surprised to hear that md's won't prescribe this drug as I've never had any problem getting a script for it. Nice thing is that it's really cheap, unlike imitrex, zomig, etc. I think the thing with midrin is that it has to be taken at the onset of the migraine or tension headache. The last time I had a really serious migraine, I ended up in the ER and it took 18mg of morphine to bring it down to a tolerable level. People who don't get migraines really have no idea how painful and debilitating they can be.
