If you look at my other post about this person I know that was suddenly 'laid off' has been diagnosed with clinical depression. She does NOT think that this is an illness. i too have clinical depression (but I fit most all the categories that I and the 'experts' can't decide type of depression applies to me).
She has disoriented speech patterns, very disorganized lately, She is the WORST procrastinator I know and that is probably what got her fired. i know that procraatination is a sign of depression.
These ae some of the symptoms.
I have tried to convince her its an illness and that the company made NO accomidation under the Americans with Disability Act when she told her boss she was depressed and had been seeing a doctor for it and was (and still is) under his care.
Since I am not being successful at convincing her that depression is just an illness and nothing to be ashamed of,maybe some of you can post things that will finally convince her that depression is an illness. And that she may should think about applying for social security diability and/or pursue this under discrimination under ADA.
Since she is NOT a member of this board (maybe some other time) and I want to show her how encouraging and knowlegable members of this board can be, I ask that if you do post, please post only honest but encouraging things.

if by "Illness" you mean physiologically based, then yes, of course depression is as much an illness as chronic pain.
If she ever took a drug before and it altered her mood, then that alone should be proof enough without reading a single thing.

What your friend should understand is that everybody gets depressed, but that not everybody gets depression. Depression IS an illness- a mental illness and is NOTHING to be ashamed of.

I have chronic depression. At one point I thought it was affecting my job performance so I got a note from my doc stating I had this illness and gave it to my boss. When a new manager tried to fire me I brought up the doctor's note. He was unable to get rid of me because of ADA (Americans with disabilities Act). SO, yes, depression is an illness and your friend would have been 'saved' had she pushed this fact. Sorry to hear she has the opinion that she's not ill.
Hope this might help.

Depression has been around for as long as humanity (as far as we know) although a disease, some people may choose to look at it differently than others. I do believe that chronic depression can be controlled with proper care. The people who are properly diagnosed and receive proper care mostly can go to live normal lives. If this approach is taken then I believe most would want to be a contributing member to society. It is unfortunate your friend got laid off. She should have been offered proper treatment & given her job back with the acceptation that she continues her treatment (much like drug addiction). If she fails to fulfill her part of the deal then the company should have the right to terminate the employee. Thats my take on it.
People need to take some responsibility for their problems & the company needs to meet them half way. They need to work together. My opinion. Communication is the key!

I have told her to get a letter from her physc doctor concerning her depression as ammo under the ADA.
Bush has changed this law that his own father considered the Best if kept off the board jewel of his tenure and I don't think it has a lot of teeth.
But it is still worth a shot.
She did send some intake info to two labor lwayers the other day before she has to sign the agreement not to sue for dismissal (or lawoff which might be moot since this might not be considered discirmatory firing).
At this point its in the hand of the two lawyers.
